Chapter 5 - The Gala at the PlazaThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, black-tie tuxedos, and silk evening gowns.

Over three hundred of the state’s most powerful figures drifted across the floor, champagne flutes in hand, while a string quartet played softly near the stage.

At the head table near the podium sat Victor Vance.

At fifty-eight, Victor was a broad, silver-haired man with an arrogant posture and a sharp, calculating smile. He wore a six-thousand-dollar custom tuxedo and a diamond pin on his lapel. Sitting beside him was Arthur Vance, the former CFO, who looked visibly nervous, constantly wiping sweat from his forehead with a linen handkerchief.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced from the stage, his voice amplified across the room. "Please welcome the Chairman of the Vance-Sterling Global Foundation... Mr. Victor Vance!"

Polite, thunderous applause filled the ballroom as Victor stood up, buttoning his jacket with a smug smile, and walked toward the podium.

He adjusted the microphone, looking out over the sea of wealthy faces.

"Thank you," Victor began, his voice smooth and practiced. "Ten years ago, my family suffered a devastating tragedy. The loss of my brother Julian and his beloved family was a wound that time can never truly heal. But from the ashes of that dark night, we built a legacy of charitable giving that has touched thousands of lives across this state..."

In the back of the ballroom, the massive double doors swung open.

The room didn't go quiet immediately, but a sudden ripple began near the entrance as people turned to see who had arrived late.

Adrian Kane walked into the ballroom.

He looked commanding in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his silver-cuffed sleeves glinting under the chandeliers, his posture radiating dark, dangerous authority. Behind him walked Marco and two senior lieutenants in formal attire.

Whispers broke out among the guests.

"Is that Adrian Kane?" a senator murmured near the front bar. "What is he doing here? He doesn't attend public galas."

Victor Vance paused mid-sentence on stage, his smile tightening as his eyes locked onto Adrian. His hand gripped the edges of the podium slightly harder.

"Ah, Mr. Kane," Victor said into the microphone, attempting to maintain his polished composure. "I didn't realize the security sector was joining us tonight. You are welcome to take a seat at the rear."

Adrian didn't take a seat. He stopped near the center aisle and turned slowly, extending his arm back toward the open doorway.

"I'm not here to sit, Victor," Adrian’s voice boomed across the silent hall, effortlessly cutting through the acoustic space. "I'm here to introduce your primary shareholder."

The crowd gasped.

From the shadow of the grand foyer, a woman stepped onto the gold carpet.

The entire ballroom seemed to lose its breath at once.

Evangeline Vance-Sterling walked into the room like a queen returning to her throne.

She wore an exquisite, midnight-blue velvet gown with a long, flowing train that trailed behind her like silk starlight. Her auburn hair was styled into an elegant, timeless updo that exposed the graceful curve of her neck—and the pale falcon-crested birthmark beneath her ear.

Around her neck, hanging from a simple diamond chain, was the platinum signet ring with the black star sapphire.

She didn't look down. She didn't look nervous. Her fierce blue eyes were locked dead onto Victor Vance's face.

Arthur Vance, sitting at Table Four, dropped his glass of champagne. It shattered violently against the marble floor, but nobody looked at him.

Victor's face went from pale to gray, then to a horrifying shade of purple. The microphone in his hand began to tremble violently.

"No..." Victor whispered into the mic, the sound echoing across the speaker system for three hundred people to hear. "No... she's dead..."

"I'm very much alive, Uncle Victor," Evangeline said, her voice clear, sharp, and ringing with absolute authority as she walked down the center aisle toward the stage, flanked by Adrian Kane.
