Chapter 6 - A Legacy of LightOne year later.

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was filled with light, music, and the low, elegant hum of three hundred guests. High-society figures, city officials, shipping magnates, and reformed business leaders filled the tables, celebrating the annual gala for the Hannah Reed Foundation.
At the head table sat Sophia Walsh.
She looked breathtaking in a floor-length white satin gown, her dark hair styled in an updo fastened with delicate pearl pins. Beside her sat Declan, looking striking in a black tuxedo.
Across the room, Mrs. Gable, Viktor, and Levi sat at their own table, laughing and drinking expensive champagne like family. The old boundaries of staff and employer had completely dissolved, replaced by a tight-knit community bound by mutual respect and genuine affection.
The master of ceremonies stood at the podium, clearing his throat.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker announced warmly, "tonight, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our founders, the Hannah Reed Foundation has officially cleared over fifty million dollars in predatory medical debt for working families across the state of Illinois!"
The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
Sophia smiled warmly, wiping a happy tear from her eye as the crowd cheered.
Declan leaned over, taking her hand under the linen tablecloth. He brought her knuckles to his lips, pressing a tender kiss against her ring.
"Ready to go home, Mrs. Walsh?" he whispered softly near her ear.
"More than ready, Mr. Walsh," she replied with a brilliant smile.
Twenty minutes later, their private car pulled up to the stone driveway of the Walsh estate.
The heavy, dark iron gates opened smoothly, welcoming them into a property that no longer felt like a fortress of shadow, but a home filled with light, warmth, and peace.
They walked upstairs together, hand in hand, stepping into the master bedroom suite. The tall windows were open slightly, allowing the cool midnight breeze and the scent of blooming spring jasmine from the gardens below to fill the room.
Declan shed his tuxedo jacket, tossing it onto a chair, while Sophia stepped over to the vanity, unhooking her pearl earrings.
She walked over to the edge of the large bed, sitting down on the edge of the mattress. She looked at Declan as he unbuttoned his cuffs, his strong frame outlined against the soft amber light of the bedside lamps.
"Come here," Sophia said softly, reaching her hand out to him.
Declan walked over to the bed, stepping between her knees. He looked down at her with endless warmth, taking her small hand in his scarred palm.
"You look exhausted, little hawk," Declan murmured gently, using the pet name he had given her months ago.
"I am," she admitted, smiling up at him. "But it's a good kind of tired."
Declan sat down beside her on the mattress, sliding his arm around her waist and pulling her gently against his side. Sophia leaned her head against his broad shoulder, her fingers intertwining tightly with his.
They sat together in comfortable, peaceful silence, watching the quiet moonlit night beyond the windows.
Her index finger rested over his thumb.
Her middle finger wrapped around his palm.
Sophia remembered the terrifying morning she had woken up holding his hand in the guest room, terrified that showing vulnerability to a dangerous man would destroy her life.
She squeezed his hand tightly.
Declan squeezed back, his grip strong, steady, and unyielding—a promise of protection that would last for the rest of their lives.
"I'm never letting go," Sophia whispered softly into the quiet room.

Declan turned his head, kissing the top of her brow. "Good," he murmured warmly. "Because I'm never letting you go either."
And there, in the quiet warmth of their home, the mafia boss and the maid who saved him stepped forward into a bright, beautiful future, forever bound by love.
