Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastTwo weeks had passed since Lawrence Hastings was transferred to a federal penitentiary upstate, his empire dismantled and his name reduced to a warning in financial circles.

Inside the Rossi estate, however, a different kind of transformation was taking place.

Cheyenne was slowly learning what it meant to exist without fear. The guards posted outside her door were no longer wardens; they were protectors. The staff, directed strictly by Damen, treated her with gentle, unwavering respect. She spent her afternoons in the estate’s sunroom, reading by the windows, watching the light dance across the waters of Oyster Bay without flinching at sudden noises or shifting shadows.

Yet, the emotional scars ran deep.

Late one Tuesday night, a violent summer thunderstorm rolled back over the estate, mimicking the weather of her wedding night. The sharp flash of lightning illuminated the master bedroom, and the heavy crash of thunder shook the windowpanes.

Cheyenne woke with a gasp, sitting straight up in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

The phantom memory of the belt, the dark room, and her father’s voice rushed back with suffocating intensity. She scrambled out of bed, her bare feet hitting the hardwood floor, intending to lock herself in the bathroom to hide.

As she reached for the bathroom door, a strong, warm hand caught her wrist.

She cried out, spinning around defensively, her hands coming up to shield her face.

Damen stood there in the dark, having woken instantly at her movement. He was wearing dark sleep pants, his chest bare, showing the lean, powerful build of a man forged in violence. But his eyes were wide with immediate concern.

"Cheyenne," he said softly, keeping his hands low, open, and entirely non-threatening. "It's just me. Look at me."

She stared at him, her chest heaving as she fought for breath. "The... the storm. I thought..."

"I know," Damen interrupted gently. He didn't force her closer. Instead, he slowly lowered himself to sit right there on the rug, leaning his back against the edge of the bed. "Come here. Or stay there. Whatever makes you feel safe."

Cheyenne hesitated, her lower lip trembling. Then, slowly, the defensive posture melted away. She dropped to her knees on the rug a few feet away from him, pulling her knees up to her chest.

"I thought I was over it," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I thought because my father is gone, because he can't hurt me anymore, the fear would just magic away. But every time it storms... my body remembers."

"Your body is protecting you," Damen said quietly. He shifted slightly, extending one large, calloused hand toward her, palm open. "You don't have to fight the memory alone, Cheyenne. You survived him. You don't have to survive the dark by yourself anymore."

Looking down at his outstretched hand, Cheyenne saw no demands, no expectations, and no threats. Just an anchor in the middle of a storm.

Slowly, testing every boundary of her own courage, she slid her hand forward and placed her palm against his.

Damen’s fingers closed securely around hers, warm and unyielding.
