Chapter 6 - A Promise Kept
That evening, the sun set over the Moretti Estate in Evanston, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, pink, and brushed gold.
The stone terrace overlooking Lake Michigan was filled with warmth, laughter, and the sweet scent of blooming spring jasmine.
Mrs. Gable was setting a outdoor dining table with fresh pasta, warm bread, and fruit tarts, while Marco played catch with Leo and Scout on the green lawn below. Maya sat at the outdoor table, carefully building a Lego castle with Victoria Sterling.
Dante stood by the stone balustrade, looking out over the clear, peaceful waters of the lake.
He felt a small hand slip into his left hand.
He looked down. Leo was standing beside him, holding his wooden baseball glove in his other hand, looking out at the sunset.
“Dante?” Leo asked quietly.
“Yes, Leo?”
“Are we ever going back to the airport?”
Dante knelt down on the warm flagstones, placing his hands on the boy’s shoulders, looking straight into his eyes.
“No, son,” Dante said, his voice carrying the absolute, unshakeable strength of an iron fortress. “You are never going back to Gate 19. You are home. This is your house. Maya is your sister, and I am your father. Nobody is ever going to leave you again.”
Leo looked at him for a long moment, then nodded firmly, a deep, peaceful calm settling over his small face. He wrapped his arms around Dante’s neck, hugging him tight.
Maya ran over from the table, throwing her arms around both of them, while Scout trotted up and let out a happy, booming bark.
Dante stood up, holding both his children in his arms, looking out over the magnificent estate, the warm house, and the bright, endless horizon ahead.
