Chapter 6 - The Perimeter of ForeverTwo weeks later, the snow over Lake Michigan melted into a crisp, bright March morning, turning the gray expanse of water into a brilliant sheet of sapphire blue beneath the spring sun.

In the east wing of the Vale estate, the security monitors were turned off.

Not because Dominic no longer cared about safety—threats still existed in the dark corners of the city, and old enemies didn't vanish overnight—but because for the first time in seven years, the cameras were no longer necessary to bridge the distance between the two brothers.

Julian sat by the south window, his laptop open on the desk, working on the final chapters of his novel. The protagonist—the detective who had spent years hiding behind closed doors—finally walked out into the light, choosing truth over survival.

Downstairs in the large main kitchen, Grace Miller stood by the counter, packing her leather satchel.

She wore her civilian clothes—a soft cream sweater and dark denim jeans. Her time as a temporary night housekeeper had officially come to an end.

The heavy oak door of the kitchen opened, and Dominic walked in. He had shed his usual dark overcoat, wearing a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

"You're leaving early," Dominic noted, stopping a few feet away from her.

"My brother Marcus is picking me up at ten," Grace said, zipping her satchel closed. "The new estate manager starts on Monday, and Julian’s new office assistant is already set up in the west wing."

Dominic looked at her for a long moment. The tension that had defined their first meeting in his dark study had completely evaporated, replaced by a quiet, steady gravity that felt entirely permanent.

"You didn't have to resign," Dominic said softly.

"I was never meant to be a housekeeper, Mr. Vale," Grace replied with a slight smile. "I’m a veterinary technician who knows how to fix broken things. And your estate doesn't need fixing anymore."

Dominic stepped closer. The scent of cedar and espresso filled the air between them. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing gently against her hand resting on the kitchen counter.

"My brother is moving into the main house next month," Dominic murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "The east wing is going to be empty. It’s... entirely too big for one person."

Grace tilted her head, her green eyes sparkling with quiet amusement. "Are you offering me a job, Mr. Vale? Because I charge consulting fees for psychological evaluations."

Dominic let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound so rare and rich that it seemed to chase away every remaining shadow in the grand old mansion.

He didn't answer with a job offer. Instead, he pulled her gently against his chest, wrapping his arms around her with an unshakeable, fierce possessiveness that felt less like a cage and more like home.

"I’m offering you a permanent place inside the perimeter, Grace," Dominic whispered against her hair. "No cameras. No locks. Just stay."

Grace smiled, her hands rising to rest against his shoulders, slipping her fingers into the warmth of his dark hair as the spring sunlight poured through the kitchen window.
