Chapter 2 - The Audit of ShadowsThe zip ties hit the floor with a sharp plastic snap.

Sophie didn't rub her wrists. She didn't dramatically gasp. She simply stood up, smoothed down the hem of her dark sweater, and walked straight past three armed mobsters toward the small desk in the corner.

She inspected the pot, rinsed it out with bottled water from a crate near the wall, and began brewing the coffee with the calm, methodical precision of a chemist.

Matteo watched her every move from his seat at the center table, where a silver laptop and several stacks of ledger printouts sat open.

“You’re not afraid,” Matteo observed, leaning back in his chair.

“Fear is a physiological response to unpredictable variables,” Sophie said, pouring a measure of dark grounds into the paper filter. “Right now, the variables are entirely predictable. You want your two million dollars. I want to go back to my apartment without a bullet in my head. Chloe is the chaos variable in both our equations.”

“She took the bonds from a secure vault in the Loop,” Matteo said, his tone turning cold and professional. “Bonds belonging to the Moretti family. I was managing the clearinghouse transfer for them. If those bonds aren't returned by Friday, the Morettis will view it as a breach of contract on my end. That means a war across three neighborhoods.”

“And you don't want a war,” Sophie said, bringing a steaming mug of pitch-black coffee over to the table and setting it down directly in front of him. “War destroys profit margins, attracts federal task forces, and destabilizes real estate holdings. You prefer surgical solutions.”

Matteo took the mug, took a cautious sip, and paused. His eyes met hers. “This is actually good.”

“I take my coffee seriously, Mr. Romano. Now, show me the ledgers.”

For the next four hours, while the rain outside turned into a torrential downpour pounding against the tin roof of the warehouse, Sophie sat across from the most feared mob boss in Chicago, analyzing stolen financial data.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard of Matteo’s laptop. Numbers reflected in her sharp green eyes—line items, routing numbers, offshore shell accounts, and wire confirmations.

“Here,” Sophie said at 3:15 AM, pointing at a column of highlighted figures. “She didn't cash the bonds.”

Matteo leaned in close, his shoulder brushing against hers. “What do you mean?”

“Chloe doesn't have the connections to fence bearer bonds of that caliber in Chicago without getting caught,” Sophie explained. “She used them as collateral for a high-interest loan from a predatory private lender operating out of the West Loop—a man named Viktor Kase.”

Leo, standing by the door, spat on the floor. “Kase. Russian muscle. He’s been trying to encroach on our gambling rings for six months.”

“Viktor Kase didn't give her cash,” Sophie continued, scrolling through a secondary ledger she had pulled from a public registry. “He gave her a clean identity package and a ticket to Miami. But Kase hasn't cleared the bonds yet either, because he knows they’re tagged with Moretti serial numbers. He’s holding them until Friday to force you into a confrontation.”

Matteo stared at the screen, his jaw tightening into a hard, lethal line. “He set a trap. He used your sister as bait to draw me into a territorial dispute.”

“Precisely,” Sophie said, leaning back and taking a sip from her own mug. “Which means your four expensive mistakes tonight were actually five. You grabbed the wrong twin, and you almost played right into Viktor Kase’s hands.”

Matteo looked at Sophie. The coldness in his eyes had been replaced by something far more dangerous: profound, calculating interest.

“You just saved me from a war, Miss Gallagher,” Matteo murmured.

“I saved myself from becoming collateral damage,” Sophie corrected sharp. “Now, as per our unspoken agreement: I’ve identified the money, I’ve exposed your rival’s strategy, and I haven't called the police. I would like to go home.”

Matteo stood up. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick leather wallet, and extracted a sleek, dark card with no raised numbers or names—a private encrypted key.

He slid it across the table to her.

“What is this?” Sophie asked.

“A line to my personal desk,” Matteo said. “Starting tomorrow morning, Viktor Kase is going to realize his trap failed. When he realizes he can't leverage Chloe, he’ll come looking for the only person in Chicago who shares her DNA.”

Sophie’s eyes narrowed. “I have nothing to do with this.”

“Kase doesn't care,” Matteo said softly, stepping closer to her until she could feel the heat radiating from his suit. “In his eyes, you’re Chloe’s twin. That makes you a target. But under my protection, you are untouchable.”

May you like

“I don't need a mobster’s protection, Mr. Romano.”

“You do tonight,” Matteo said, his voice dropping to a low, commanding whisper. “Because my men didn't just break your door frame, Sophie. They drew a line across Chicago. And whether you like it or not, you’re standing on my side of it now.”
