Chapter 2 - The Safehouse on 84th StreetThe SUV did not return to the Corsetti Building. Instead, it headed north, winding through the upper edges of Manhattan until it pulled into the subterranean garage of a discreet, high-security residential building on East 84th Street.

The building did not exist on public property records. It was one of three private safehouses maintained by Nathan for high-level emergencies—fortresses disguised as luxury penthouses.
The private elevator opened directly into a sprawling apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. The interior was minimalist and pristine: white marble floors, dark leather furniture, and a complete absence of personal photographs or decorative clutter.
"Alessio is downstairs securing the perimeter," Marco said as he stepped out of the elevator behind us, holding a silver briefcase containing secure communication devices. "The Benedetti family doesn't know about this location yet, but Victor is already calling your personal cell, boss. He wants to know why you publicly humiliated his top enforcer at Marello’s."
"Let him call," Nathan said coldly, unbuttoning his waistcoat and tossing it onto the arm of a leather sofa. "Tell him I am in a meeting. Tell him if Lorenzo Vance sets foot south of 59th Street again, I will return him to Brooklyn in a wooden box."
"Understood," Marco replied, bowing his head slightly before retreating down the hallway toward the security control room.
I stood near the entrance of the living room, feeling completely out of place in my office attire. The reality of the situation was settling over me like a heavy, suffocating blanket. I couldn't go back to my apartment. I couldn't go back to my desk. My quiet, structured life as a corporate secretary had been obliterated in less than three hours.
"Drink this," Nathan said, approaching me with a crystal glass containing two fingers of dark amber whiskey.
I took the glass, my fingers brushing against his. "I don't usually drink during business hours."
"Business hours ended the moment I kissed you," Nathan replied quietly. He poured a glass for himself and took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving my face. "Drink it, Natalie. It will help with the shock."
I took a small sip. The high-end liquor burned down my throat, spreading a sudden, welcome warmth through my chest. "How long do I have to stay here?"
"Until Victor Benedetti is no longer a threat," Nathan said flatly.
"That could take weeks! Months!" I stepped closer to him, my indignation flaring up through the shock. "Nathan, I have a life. I have a sister in Chicago, I have bills, I have a cat—"
"Marco has already arranged for your cat to be picked up and taken to a private vet boarding facility under a false name," Nathan interrupted calmly. "Your sister's house in Chicago is currently being watched by two of my men to ensure Victor doesn't try to locate you through her. Every financial account you own has been temporarily mirrored and secured."
I stared at him, stunned by the sheer efficiency with which he had rewritten my entire existence in a matter of minutes.
"You had all of this ready?" I asked, my voice dropping into an incredulous whisper. "Before I even left for lunch today?"
Nathan set his glass down on a side table with a quiet clink. He took a step toward me, closing the distance between us until I had to tilt my head back to look into his eyes.
"I have had a contingency plan for your protection since the day you started working for me, Natalie," he confessed softly. "Do you really think I didn't notice how Victor looked at you when he came to my office six months ago? Do you think I didn't see the way his men tracked your movements whenever you delivered paperwork to the docks?"
"You never said a word," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"Because as long as you were just my secretary, you were relatively safe," Nathan said, his hand rising to gently touch the side of my neck, his thumb tracing the rapid pulse beating beneath my skin. "The moment I showed any personal interest in you, you became a target. I spent two years keeping my distance, watching you from behind my desk, holding my tongue every time you looked at me with those wide, intelligent eyes... all to keep you safe from the monsters in my world."
His fingers slid into the hair at the nape of my neck, his grip possessive yet remarkably gentle.
"But today," Nathan continued, his dark eyes flashing with a terrifying, beautiful intensity, "Victor pushed me too far. He brought a gun into a restaurant where you were sitting. And the moment I saw Lorenzo Vance watching you... I realized I would rather tear this entire city apart than let anyone hurt you."
My breath hitched. The proximity, the heat radiating off his body, the absolute sincerity in his deep voice—it completely dismantled every defense I had spent two years constructing.
"Nathan..." I murmured, my hand rising instinctively to press against his broad chest. I could feel the hard, steady thud of his heartbeat beneath the fine silk of his shirt. "This is crazy. We can't... you're my boss."
"I stopped being your boss the second my lips touched yours," Nathan growled softly.
He didn't give me time to process his words. He pulled me against him, his mouth coming down on mine with a fierce, possessive hunger that instantly shattered my remaining resolve.
This kiss was different from the one at the restaurant. That kiss had been a statement to the world; this kiss was a surrender to each other. It was warm, deep, and intoxicating. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling myself flush against his hard frame, letting out a soft sigh against his lips as his tongue tasted mine.
Nathan groaned softly, his arms wrapping tightly around my waist, lifting me slightly off the floor as he deepened the kiss. Every touch sent electricity firing through my veins. The restraint he had held back for two years exploded into a wild, undeniable passion that consumed us both.
When he finally broke the kiss, both of us were breathing heavily, our foreheads resting together in the quiet room.
"You stay here, Natalie," Nathan whispered against my lips, his thumb lightly brushing across my swollen lower lip. "You stay here where I can protect you. And when this is over... we are going to finish what we started."
Before I could answer, the heavy steel door of the safehouse's private elevator chimed.
Marco stepped out into the living room, holding a encrypted satellite phone. His face was grim, his eyes heavy with dark news.
"Boss," Marco said quietly, ignoring the intimate posture between us. "It's your father. He just landed at JFK. And he brought the entire Sicilian council with him."
Nathan slowly pulled back from me, his jaw tightening as his professional armor instantly reconstructed itself.

"Why is he here?" Nathan asked, his voice dropping into an icy register.
"He heard about the scene at Marello’s," Marco replied. "And he says you've lost your mind over a girl."
