Chapter 4 - Blood and Steel at MidnightThe glass windows of the grand ballroom shattered inward in a simultaneous cascade of diamond shards as heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the lawn outside.

“Down!” Sofia roared, physically tackling Victor out of his chair while Adrian lunged forward, throwing his entire body over Avery to shield her from the incoming fire.
Bulleted plaster rained down from the ornate ceilings. Heavy boots thundered across the hardwood floors of the foyer as Marcus Vance’s enforcers breached the primary entrance, smoke grenades rolling across the polished marble and filling the room with blinding, choking gray fog.
“Sofia! Take her through the panic room behind the portrait!” Adrian yelled over the deafening roar of submachine gun fire, pulling his own custom Sig Sauer P226 from his shoulder holster.
“I’m not leaving you!” Avery shouted back, her ears ringing, coughing from the thick chemical smoke.
“You’re not leaving with me unless we survive this!” Adrian fired three rapid shots through the haze toward the shattered French doors, dropping an advancing gunman before he could clear the threshold. “Go! Now!”
Sofia grabbed Avery by the arm, hauling her toward the painting of the late patriarch by the fireplace. Sofia slammed her palm against the hidden keypad behind the frame, and the heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a lit concrete corridor equipped with emergency communications and heavy weaponry.
“Get inside!” Sofia ordered, shoving Avery into the sanctuary before drawing her secondary firearm and spinning around to cover the doorway.
Adrian was already kneeling behind a heavy mahogany sofa, returning systematic, lethal fire against the wave of black-clad mercenaries flooding the room. Marcus Vance, a hulking brute of a man with a jagged scar running from his ear to his jawline, stepped through the smoke holding a customized assault rifle.
“It’s over, Adrian!” Vance bellowed over the gunfire. “The old man’s era is done! The syndicate voted twenty minutes ago—we take the estate, we take the ports, and we bury the Vale name once and for all!”
Adrian fired two rounds that sparked harmlessly off Vance’s tactical vest, then clicked dry. Empty.
Vance grinned maliciously, raising his rifle barrel directly toward Adrian’s chest. “Say goodbye to the family business, Vale.”
Before Vance could pull the trigger, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the dark corridor behind the panic room.
A heavy, low-caliber report rang out—distinct, precise, and surgical.
Vance’s rifle slipped from his hands. A clean, round hole appeared dead-center in his tactical chest plate, and the powerful syndicate boss dropped to his knees, gasping for air before collapsing face-first onto the shattered glass.
Adrian snapped his head around toward the panic room entrance.
Standing in the doorway, holding a heavy-duty tactical rifle with professional, steady composure, was Avery. The smoke swirled around her red dress like a dark halo, her hazel eyes locked on the fallen enforcer with absolute, chilling calm.

“My family’s business,” Avery said, her voice cutting cleanly through the settling silence of the room, “ends with me.”
Adrian stared at her, a profound mixture of shock, awe, and fierce, burning pride washing over him. The woman who had spent her life counting quarters in a laundromat was gone. In her place stood Camilla Vale, the true sovereign of the empire.
