Chapter 5 - The Crucible of BloodTime slowed down to a crawl.

In that split second, two decades of my mother's terrified warnings condensed into a single, crystal-clear realization: Running never saved anyone. You have to fight.
I didn't scream. I didn't beg.
Instead of backing away, I lunged forward.
I grabbed the heavy silver tray off the floor and swung it with all the strength in my body, smashing the hard metal edge directly into the guard's wrist just as he squeezed the trigger.
Pfft!
The suppressed gunshot went wild, the bullet tearing through the drywall near the ceiling, showering plaster dust over the rug.
The guard grunted in pain, dropping the gun, but he was twice my size. He grabbed me by the throat, his massive fingers squeezing off my airway, slamming me backward against the nursery wall. Spots of black swam before my eyes as I clawed desperately at his arms, my lungs burning for oxygen.
Across the room, the noise awoke Leo. The baby sat up in his crib, taking one look at the violence in his room, and let out a blood-curdling, terrified scream.
"Shut that brat up!" the guard growled, tightening his grip on my neck, lifting my feet off the floor.
Through the haze of suffocating darkness, my hand brushed against the heavy brass table lamp sitting on the side table beside me. I grabbed the base of the lamp with both hands and whipped it sideways, smashing the heavy metal socket directly into the guard's temple.
CRACK.
The man groaned, his grip loosening as blood gushed from a gash over his eye. I fell to the floor, coughing violently, gasping for air, but I didn't pause for a single second. I scrambled across the hardwood, grabbed the suppressed pistol from the floor where he had dropped it, and pointed it at his chest with both trembling hands.
"Move," I choked out, my voice raw and broken, "and I will blow a hole through your heart."
The guard froze on his knees, holding his bleeding head, looking at me with absolute shock. He hadn't expected a waitress to pick up a gun.
Before he could react, the heavy oak doors of the nursery were blown off their hinges.
BOOM!
Lorenzo burst into the room like an apex predator unleashed from hell. His suit jacket was gone, his dark shirt soaked with sweat, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury. Behind him, Viktor and four tactical guards flooded into the room, weapons drawn.
Lorenzo took in the scene in a single microsecond—the shattered glass on the floor, the unconscious maid, the bleeding assassin on his knees, and me, standing over the man, holding a gun, protecting his screaming son.
"SECURE THE ROOM!" Lorenzo roared.
Viktor slammed the assassin face-first onto the floor, pulling his arms behind his back in heavy flex-cuffs, while the other guards dragged the unconscious maid out into the hallway.
Lorenzo rushed across the room, ignoring the weapons, ignoring the blood, and threw his arms around me.
He pulled me against his chest with a force that took my remaining breath away. I dropped the gun—it clattered harmlessly onto the rug—and buried my face into his shoulder, my entire body shaking in violent, uncontrollable waves as the adrenaline finally flushed out of my system.
"I've got you," Lorenzo sobbed, his voice cracking with an emotion he could no longer hide. He pressed his face into my hair, his large hands cradling the back of my head, holding me so tightly I could feel the violent, frantic pounding of his heart against his ribs. "I've got you, Mara. You're safe. I swear to God, you're safe."
"Leo..." I choked out through my tears, pulling back slightly. "He tried... the milk..."
Lorenzo looked at the shattered glass and the bubbling varnish on the floorboards. A dark, terrifying realization washed over his face, replaced instantly by an absolute, murderous resolve.
He walked over to the crib, picked up his crying son, and brought Leo back to us. Leo immediately reached out, his tiny arms tangling in my sweater, burying his wet face into my neck, his small body shivering with fear.
I wrapped my arms around the baby, and Lorenzo wrapped his broad arms around the both of us, holding his entire world in a single, unbreakable circle.
"Viktor!" Lorenzo called out over my shoulder, his voice dropping into a deadly, chilling register that promised total annihilation.

"Yes, Boss?" Viktor replied from the doorway.
"Assemble the entire strike team," Lorenzo ordered, his dark eyes fixed on the puddle of acid on the floor. "Contessa has breached my home for the last time. Tonight, we purge the Vance family once and for all."
