Chapter 6 - The Pink StrawSix months later.

The sun shone brightly over the manicured rear lawns of the Moretti estate in Lake Forest. The lake was a calm, brilliant blue, its quiet waters reflecting the clear summer sky.

In the center of the terrace sat a large wooden table covered with a white linen tablecloth.

At the table sat Ava, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her face filled with laughter as she helped Mara squeeze fresh lemons into a massive glass pitcher filled with cold water and ice.

Dante stood near the terrace doors, wearing a simple linen shirt and trousers, holding a silver tray containing three glasses.

He wasn't looking at his phone. He wasn't reviewing legal briefs or reading intelligence reports on port shipping.

He was watching Mara.

Over the last six months, the estate had transformed. The cold, solemn atmosphere of a house lived in by a widowed mob boss had vanished. In its place was warmth, music, and the sound of a child’s clear, joyous laughter echoing through the halls.

Mara had restructured the entire security protocol of the estate, turning it into an impregnable fortress—not with heavy walls and terrifying men with guns, but with absolute transparency, strict vetting, and an environment where every staff member was treated with dignity and respect.

She walked over to the edge of the table, holding a small bowl of sugar.

“Not too much sugar, Ava,” Mara laughed as the little girl reached for a big wooden spoon. “Your father will blame me when you’re bouncing off the walls at bedtime.”

“Daddy likes it sweet!” Ava declared, dumping two heavy spoons of sugar into the pitcher and stirring vigorously.

Dante walked over to the table, setting his silver tray down.

“I like whatever you two make,” Dante said, leaning down to press a kiss against the top of Ava’s head before sliding his arm around Mara’s waist, pulling her softly against his side.

Mara rested her head against his shoulder, feeling the deep, peaceful rhythm of his breathing.

“Look, Mara!” Ava squealed, reaching into a small paper bag sitting beside her plate.

She pulled out a box of straws and carefully selected three of them.

They were pink-and-white striped.

Ava placed one straw into each of the three glasses on the tray, then looked up at Mara with bright, dark eyes that held no lingering shadows of that terrible night at Bellamy House.

“Matches the flowers!” Ava beamed, pointing to the small pot of pink roses sitting in the middle of the table.

Mara looked at the pink straws, then looked up at Dante.

He was looking down at her, his steel-gray eyes filled with a love so deep, so absolute, that it brought a sweet, warm prickle of tears to her eyes.

Dante reached into his trousers pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

He didn't make a grand spectacle. He didn't drop to his knee like a character in a movie.

He simply opened the box, revealing a magnificent oval-cut diamond ring set into a delicate platinum band that sparkled like sunlight on the lake.

“Mara,” Dante said softly, his voice trembling slightly with quiet emotion. “Six months ago, you walked into my life holding a silver tray. You saved my daughter. You saved my home. And you saved me from becoming a man who forgot how to feel.”

He took her hand—the same hand that had served food to ungrateful strangers, the same hand that had stood against ruthless killers, the same hand that now held his heart.

“I don't want you to be my estate manager, Mara,” Dante whispered, looking deep into her eyes. “I want you to be my wife. I want you to be Ava’s mother. I want to spend every day of the rest of my life proving to you that you will never have to face this world alone again.”

Ava gasped, clapping her small hands together. “Say yes, Mara! Say yes!”

Mara looked at the ring, then looked at the child who had captured her heart, and finally looked at the man who had given her a life beyond her wildest dreams.

She didn't hesitate.

“Yes,” Mara whispered, a tear of pure joy spilling over her cheek as she threw her arms around Dante’s neck. “Yes, Dante. Absolute yes.”

Dante slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a powerful, sweeping embrace, kissing her deeply as Ava giggled and danced around their legs on the sunny terrace.

When Dante finally released her, Mara picked up her glass of fresh, homemade lemonade.

She looked at the cloudy ice, the pink-and-white straw, and the reflection of the blue sky on the surface of the drink.

She took a slow, sweet sip.

“How is it?” Dante asked, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, his chest warm against her back.

Mara turned her head, looking into the eyes of the man she loved, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of their home.

“It’s sweet, Dante,” Mara whispered, a brilliant, beautiful smile illuminating her face. “It’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever tasted.”

The End
