Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF BLOODThe silence that followed the final gunshot was absolute, suffocating, and heavy with the scent of cordite and copper.

Jared lowered his weapon, his chest heaving as he took in the scene in his library.
Two operatives lay unconscious or dead on the floor. King stood over the first man, his broad chest wet with blood—none of it his own—his heavy tail giving a single, rigid thump as he saw his master.
And in the center of the room stood Willa.
She was trembling from head to toe, her knuckles white from clutching the heavy metal oxygen tank, her eyes wide as she stared at the fallen men, then up at Jared.
Jared dropped his weapon onto the desk and covered the distance between them in two massive strides. He didn't say a word. He grabbed the oxygen tank from her hands, tossing it aside, and pulled Willa violently into his chest.
His arms wrapped around her like steel bands, pressing her close, his heart hammering wildly against her cheek. He buried his face in her hair, breathing in her scent, confirming with every fiber of his being that she was unhurt.
Willa didn't pull away. She couldn't.
She collapsed into his embrace, her hands clutching the torn, blood-stained fabric of his shirt, letting out a ragged, sob-filled breath she had been holding since the siege began.
"You're safe," Jared whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, unscripted emotion that no man in New York had ever heard from his lips. "I have you. You're safe."
King trotted over, pressing his large head against both of their legs, completing the tight, protective circle in the middle of the ruined library.
Ten minutes later, the penthouse was flooded with Jared’s surviving security forces. Miles Drummond, his arm wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage, directed the cleanup with cold, efficient professionalism. The bodies were removed, the blast shutters raised, and the rain-slicked night sky once again filled the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The assault on Kensington Tower had failed.
The Moretti strike teams had been completely decimated. By eight o'clock the following morning, news of the failed raid sent shockwaves through the dark underbelly of the city’s criminal network. The message was unmistakable: Jared Kensington was untouchable, and anyone who targeted his household would be erased entirely.
In the master suite, Willa sat on the edge of a massive leather sofa.
A private physician had already examined her and King, confirming that neither had suffered any serious physical injuries.
Jared stood by the window, looking out over the city as the grey dawn began to break through the clouds. He had changed into a clean black shirt, but his face remained shadowed with an intense, agonizing conflict.
"It's over," Jared said quietly, his back still turned to her. "The Moretti family no longer exists in New York. Their assets have been seized, and their leadership has fled the country."
Willa looked at his broad back, her hands resting in her lap. "And Brendan?"
Jared turned around slowly. "Brendan Miller was handed over to federal authorities two hours ago. Miles provided them with complete, irrefutable evidence of his financial crimes, extortion, and physical assault cases in three states. He will spend the next twenty years in a maximum-security federal facility."
Willa let out a long, trembling breath. The shadow that had chased her across state lines, the nightmare that had forced her into hiding in a Brooklyn alley, was finally gone. She was truly, completely free.
"Thank you, Jared," she said softly, her voice filled with a profound, quiet sincerity.
Jared looked at her, his icy eyes filled with a heavy, painful weight.
"You don't have to thank me," Jared said, stepping toward her and pulling a clean passport, a set of legal residence documents, and a black credit card from his pocket, placing them on the table before her. "You are free to go, Willa."
Willa blinked, looking up at him in surprise. "What?"
"I built this life on violence, blood, and control," Jared said, his voice dropping into a quiet, painful murmur. "Tonight proved that bringing you into my world put you in danger. You almost died in that room because of my war."
He looked down at King, who was sleeping peacefully on the rug beside her feet.
"You saved my dog," Jared continued, his jaw tightening as he fought to maintain his composure. "You gave him back his soul. And in return, I dragged you into hell. I won't do it anymore. Miles has a car waiting downstairs. There is a house in upstate New York registered in your legal name. No one knows where it is. You can live a quiet, peaceful life. You can finally start over."
Willa stared at the documents on the table, then looked up at the feared crime lord of Manhattan.
She saw the truth in his eyes.
He wasn't sending her away because he didn't want her. He was sending her away because he loved her enough to let her go—sacrificing his own happiness to ensure her safety.
Willa slowly stood up from the sofa.
She didn't reach for the documents. She didn't reach for the keycard.
Instead, she took two steps forward, closing the distance between them, and placed her soft hand directly against Jared’s cheek, feeling the rough stubble beneath her palm and the sudden, sharp intake of his breath.
"You spent six years thinking everyone around you only felt fear, didn't you?" Willa whispered softly, her thumb gently brushing his cheekbone.
Jared stared at her, his throat moving as he swallowed hard, unable to speak.
"When I looked into King’s eyes three weeks ago," Willa continued, her voice steady, clear, and filled with an undeniable strength, "I saw a creature that had given up because he felt entirely alone in a cold world."
She stepped even closer, her second hand moving up to cup his other jaw, forcing the most powerful man in New York to look directly into her heart.
"I don't see a monster, Jared," she said fiercely. "I see a man who protected me when no one else would. I see the man who gave my life back to me."

"Willa..." Jared choked out, his hands coming up to grasp her wrists, his grip shaking with intense restraint. "It’s dangerous here. My life will always be surrounded by shadows."
"Then we fight the shadows together," Willa replied, her gaze unyielding. "Because my life isn't in a house upstate, Jared. My life is right here. With King... and with you."
