Chapter 4 - The Shadows at the Gate

The sudden alarm tore through the penthouse like a siren. Red emergency lights began flashing along the hallways as heavy steel shutters automatically rolled down over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, transforming the luxury home into an impenetrable bunker.

"Where is Rossi?" Jared demanded, his voice turning into ice as he pulled a black custom handgun from his desk drawer, checking the chamber with practiced, lethal efficiency.

"He disabled the primary security grid on floor fifty-seven," Miles reported hastily, pulling his own weapon. "He brought eight armed men. They’re using the freight elevator! Boss... he didn't just steal money. He sold your location to the Vance family!"

Willa’s heart dropped into her stomach. "Brendan..."

Jared turned to Willa instantly. He grabbed her by the shoulders, his grip firm, grounded, and intensely protective.

"Miles, take Willa and Titan into the panic room behind the wine cellar," Jared ordered fiercely. "Lock the titanium door. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Jared, no!" Willa cried out, grabbing the lapels of his suit jacket. "They're coming for you! Marco knows your security protocols!"

"This is my city, Willa," Jared said, his eyes burning with absolute, terrifying confidence. He leaned down, pressing a hard, fierce kiss against her lips—a promise wrapped in fire and steel. "Nobody comes into my home to hurt what's mine. Go with Miles. Now!"

Before she could protest further, Miles pulled her toward the hidden corridor behind the living room. Titan let out a deep, protective bark, trotting closely behind Willa as they descended a narrow spiral staircase leading to the reinforced basement bunker.

Inside the panic room, the thick steel door sealed shut with a heavy, pneumatic hiss.

The room was equipped with tactical monitors displaying live feeds from the security cameras throughout the penthouse. Willa stood glued to the screens, her hands clenched into tight fists, her heart hammering wildly against her chest.

On screen three, she watched Jared.

He stood in the grand living room alone, framed by the red emergency lighting. He looked like an ancient god of war—calm, lethal, and completely untouchable.

The private elevator doors burst open. Six men in dark tactical gear poured into the room, weapons raised. Among them was Marco Rossi, holding a briefcase of stolen documents, and behind him stood Brendan Vance.

Brendan looked older, wilder, his eyes bloodshot with rage and obsession. He held a heavy revolver in his hand, shouting something toward the monitors that the audio couldn't capture.

Willa gasped, covering her mouth as gunfire erupted on the screen.

Jared moved with terrifying speed. He didn't just defend; he executed. In less than forty seconds, five of the armed men were on the floor, disarmed and neutralised. Jared fired three precise shots, taking out Marco's legs before he could reach the exit.

However, as the smoke cleared in the living room, Brendan Vance scrambled out from behind a overturned marble sofa, raising his revolver directly at Jared’s back while Jared was securing Marco.

"JARED! BEHIND YOU!" Willa screamed at the monitor, though she knew he couldn't hear her.

On the screen, Brendan pulled the trigger.

BANG!

Jared spun around, but the bullet grazed his shoulder, dark blood blooming instantly across his white shirt. Jared stumbled backward against the marble pillar. Brendan grinned wildly, stepping forward, raising the gun to deliver a final, fatal shot to Jared's chest.

"NO!" Willa screamed in the panic room.

She didn't think. She acted on pure, unadulterated survival instinct.

Willa slammed her hand onto the emergency door override button. The heavy titanium door hissed open.

"Willa, wait! It's not safe!" Miles shouted behind her, but Willa was already sprinting up the spiral staircase, her worn sneakers flying over the steps, Titan charging right beside her like a unleashed silver thunderbolt!
