Chapter 6 - A New Dawn on the Bay

Six months later, the cold rain of autumn had given way to the warm, brilliant sunshine of a late April morning.

The gardens of the Carver estate were in full bloom, the scent of lavender and fresh-cut grass drifting on the gentle breeze from the Narragansett Bay. The sound of children's laughter echoed near the stone fountain.

Eight-year-old Ben was running across the lawn, chasing a puppy that Daniel had bought for him a month earlier. Sitting on a wooden bench nearby, Caleb Monroe watched them, a healthy color back in his cheeks. He had spent the last several months recovering, and Daniel had hired him as the chief financial officer for the restructured, clean Carver shipping line.

Near the rose bushes, Hannah stood, holding a small bundle wrapped in a soft pink blanket.

Her dark brown hair had grown back, now falling past her shoulders in healthy, shining waves. She wore a simple, elegant white linen dress, her face glowing with a radiant, peaceful happiness.

She looked down at the sleeping baby in her arms. Little Clara—named after the light she had brought into their lives—had Aaron's bright blue eyes, but she had a calm, quiet demeanor that Hannah knew she had inherited from someone else.

Footsteps sounded on the gravel path behind her.

Hannah didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The warmth that settled over her shoulders was familiar, safe, and entirely hers.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her temple, right where the jagged cut had once been. He looked down at the sleeping baby, a soft, rare smile warming his features.

"She looks peaceful today," Daniel murmured, his deep voice sending a pleasant shiver down Hannah's spine.

"She slept through the night for the first time," Hannah said, turning slightly in his embrace to look up into his dark eyes. "Mr. Hale says she has your stubbornness."

"It’s not stubbornness," Daniel chuckled, his chest rumbly against her back. "It’s determination."

He reached down, his thumb gently brushing against the baby's soft cheek.

Six months ago, Hannah had been a terrified, pregnant widow hiding in the shadows of a dangerous mansion, searching for scraps of truth. Today, she was the heart of the estate.

Daniel stepped in front of her, taking both of her hands in his. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

"Hannah," Daniel said, his voice serious, his eyes holding hers with an unwavering intensity. "I spent thirty-eight years of my life believing that power was the only thing that could keep me safe. But the moment I saw you protecting your child in that ballroom, I realized I didn't know anything about real strength."

He opened the box, revealing a simple, stunning emerald ring that matched the color of the spring grass.

"I don't want to protect you from a distance anymore," Daniel said. "I want to build a life with you. I want to be a father to Clara, a guardian to Ben, and a husband to the strongest woman I have ever known. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure joy filled Hannah's eyes, spilling over her lashes. She didn't hesitate.

"Yes, Daniel," she whispered, her voice steady and filled with a certain hope. "Yes, a thousand times."

As Daniel slid the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a warm, deep kiss under the brilliant April sun, the shadows of the past finally faded away. The waterfront was quiet, the docks were peaceful, and the sun, at long last, had returned to live in their lives.
