Chapter 4 - The Recovery of the Heir

By early summer, the conflict between the Moretti and Caruso families had reached a boiling point.

Vincent Caruso had pulled his political favors from the port authority, freezing three of Ethan’s primary construction permits and launching a series of highly publicized financial audits against the Moretti transportation companies. But Ethan didn't break. Instead, he worked in silence, using his network of loyal labor unions to quietly halt all cargo shipments at the Caruso-controlled terminals, paralyzing their smuggling operations and costing them millions of dollars a day.

And then, on a rainy Tuesday evening in July, Marco returned to the estate with the breakthrough they had been waiting for.

"We found him, Ethan," Marco said, stepping into the study, his coat dripping with rainwater. "Owen Reed. He was being held in a private medical facility owned by a Caruso shell company in Indiana. They had him sedated, trying to get him to sign a waiver declaring his sister’s allegations were the result of mental illness."

Ethan stood up, his jaw tightening. "Is he alive?"

"He’s alive, and he’s safe," Marco nodded. "We extracted him three hours ago. He’s currently at a secure house downtown, under our family’s protection. And he didn't come empty-handed. Before they grabbed him, he managed to secure the digital manifests for the Caruso shipping containers. It’s all here, Ethan. The automatic weapons, the unregistered chemical shipments, and the banking codes showing Vanessa’s personal signature on the customs bribes."

"Get the federal prosecutor on the line," Ethan ordered, his eyes shining with a dangerous, triumphant light. "We don't go through the local police. Vincent Caruso has too many councilmen in his pocket. We go straight to the federal district attorney. This ends tonight."

Before Marco could turn to leave, the internal intercom on the desk chimed with a sharp, frantic tone.

“Boss! It’s Mr. Bennett in the east wing! Hannah’s water just broke—she’s going into premature labor!”

Ethan didn't wait for Marco. He sprinted out of the study, his boots pounding against the polished marble corridors of the mansion as he raced toward the east wing.

When he burst into the sitting room, he found Dr. Porter and two private nurses already preparing the medical equipment. Hannah lay on the bed, her face covered in a sheen of sweat, her hands gripping the sheets as a massive, agonizing contraction tore through her abdomen.

"She’s thirty-two weeks, Ethan!" Dr. Porter called out, his voice tense but controlled. "We cannot stop the labor this time. The stress has triggered an early delivery. We need to perform an emergency cesarean section right here—we don't have time to transport her to the clinic!"

Ethan threw off his suit jacket, rolling up his sleeves as he walked to the side of the bed. He reached down, his large, steady hand closing around Hannah’s trembling fingers.

"I’m here, Hannah," Ethan said, his voice a solid, unyielding anchor in the storm of her pain. "Look at me. Focus on my voice. You are safe. Your brother is safe. We found him."

Hannah looked up at him through her tears, her eyes wide with a mixture of agony and hope. "Owen... he’s... he’s alive?"

"He’s alive, and he’s under my protection," Ethan assured her, his thumb gently wiping away the sweat from her forehead. "Now, I need you to be strong for our child. Just a little longer, Hannah."

For the next forty-five minutes, the room was a blur of medical precision, hushed commands, and the quiet, intense focus of the team. Ethan didn't leave her side for a single second, his hand holding hers through every surge of pain, his voice guiding her through the dark.

And then, at exactly 1:14 a.m., the quiet room was filled with a sharp, thin, and beautiful sound.

A baby's cry.

Dr. Porter lifted the tiny, perfect infant, wrapping him in a warm, white flannel blanket before placing him gently against Hannah’s chest.

"It's a boy, Hannah," the doctor smiled, his eyes reflecting a deep, professional relief. "He’s small, but his lungs are perfectly clear. He’s a fighter."

Hannah looked down at her son, her tears falling freely now as she pressed her lips against the baby’s soft, dark brown hair. She looked up at Ethan, her heart overflowing with a profound, unspoken gratitude.

But Ethan wasn't looking at the baby's face. He was looking at the baby’s left shoulder, where a tiny, pale, crescent-shaped birthmark was visible against the pink skin.

It was the exact same birthmark that Ethan carried on his own shoulder—the ancient, genetic signature of the Moretti bloodline that had been passed down from his grandfather.

He looked from the baby to Hannah, a sudden, blinding realization hitting his mind like a physical blow.

Leo Reed hadn't been the father of her child. Three weeks before her husband’s death, during a brief, desperate period when Hannah had been separated from Leo and working as a private host at the Moretti charity gala, Ethan had shared a single, passionate night with her in the dark gardens—a night that both of them had tried to forget for the sake of her marriage and his corporate obligations.

"Ethan..." Hannah whispered, her eyes meeting his with a soft, trembling vulnerability. "I... I never told you because I didn't want to ruin your alliance. I didn't want him to be a target."

May you like

Ethan reached down, his fingers gently touching the tiny, perfect hand of his son, who instantly wrapped his tiny fingers around his father’s thumb.

"He’s not a target anymore, Hannah," Ethan whispered, his grey eyes turning warm and wet as he looked at his family. "He is the heir to the Moretti name. And I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone touch him."
