Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of SterlingDamian moved through the dark subterranean hallways like a ghost, his shoes making no sound against the cold stone floor. Clara stayed two steps behind him, her eyes wide, her pulse racing.

They reached the grand central foyer of the mansion.
Harrison Sterling stood near the heavy mahogany desk in Damian’s study, frantically stuffing confidential property deeds and bearer bonds into a leather briefcase. Vanessa stood by the window, nervously watching the front driveway.
“Hurry up, Dad!” Vanessa hissed, clutching her designer coat around her shoulders. “The guards outside aren't going to stay unconscious forever!”
“I’m almost done!” Harrison spat, grabbing a thick stack of real estate titles. “With these deeds, we can tie Moretti up in probate court for five years! He’ll be ruined before he can legally prove—”
“He won't have to prove anything, Harrison.”
The cold, quiet voice cut through the study like a razor blade.
Harrison and Vanessa both froze, turning slowly toward the doorway.
Damian stood in the threshold, his broad frame blocking the light from the hallway. His pistol was pointed directly at Harrison’s chest. Beside him stood Clara, her face pale but her expression cold, calm, and victorious.
Vanessa let out a sharp, terrified shriek. “No! How... how did you get out of the vault?!”
Harrison dropped his briefcase, his face turning gray as he backed away toward the desk. “Damian... wait! Listen to me! It was Vanessa! She convinced me to do this! She wanted revenge!”
“Dad!” Vanessa screamed, staring at her father in absolute shock. “You coward!”
“Shut up, you foolish girl!” Harrison yelled, his hands shaking violently in the air. “Damian, please! We can make a deal! I’ll sign over all my shares in Vanguard! I’ll leave the country!”
“You tried to suffocate the woman I love,” Damian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark, so heavy, that the entire room seemed to grow cold.
Clara’s heart skipped a beat at his words—the woman I love.
Before Harrison could plead again, the heavy front doors of the estate were kicked open with a deafening crash.
Marcus and ten heavily armed Moretti security officers flooded into the foyer, their tactical weapons instantly locking onto Harrison and Vanessa.
Behind them walked Rosa Moretti, holding her silver walking stick, accompanied by two high-ranking detectives from the New York State Police and three federal agents from the SEC.
Rosa stepped into the study, looking at the mess of stolen documents on the desk, then at Harrison’s trembling hands.
“Harrison Sterling,” the lead federal agent announced, stepping forward with a pair of handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, grand larceny, breaking and entering, and attempted murder.”
As the agents slapped the steel cuffs onto Harrison’s wrists, Vanessa tried to bolt toward the side exit, but Marcus stepped smoothly into her path, grabbing her arm and securing her in handcuffs as well.
Vanessa struggled, her hair falling out of its neat bun, tears smearing her mascara as she looked at Damian.
“Damian!” she sobbed, her voice ringing with hysterical desperation. “Please don't let them take me! I love you! You can't replace me with a servant!”
Damian didn't even look at her. He turned his head away, stepping closer to Clara, his arm sliding around her shoulders to keep her warm and safe against his side.
“Take them away,” Rosa ordered flatly, tapping her stick against the floor. “They are cluttering my hallway.”
As the police dragged the screaming Sterlings out into the rainy night, the grand mansion fell into a peaceful, profound quiet.
Rosa walked over to Damian and Clara, her sharp eyes softening as she looked at the young woman resting against her nephew’s chest.
“You did well, child,” Rosa said to Clara, offering a rare, gentle smile. “My brother would have been very proud to have you guarding his art.”

“Thank you, Miss Moretti,” Clara said softly.
Rosa turned her gaze to Damian. “Fix this house, Damian. It’s time we had some real joy in these halls.”
