Chapter 4 - Checkmate on 14th StreetThe weather over South Chicago had turned brutal by five o'clock. Torrential rain mixed with sleet slammed against the corrugated iron roofs of the industrial district along 14th Street.

Inside the massive, poorly lit Marletta Shipping Warehouse, six heavy luxury SUVs were parked in a defensive circle. Thirty armed men—the elite strike force of the Marletta family, along with Lorenzo Rossi’s Boston mercenaries—stood around burning oil drums to keep warm, their assault rifles slung low across their chests.

At the center of the warehouse, inside a converted glass-walled shipping office, Anthony Marletta was pacing like a rabid dog.

His face was flushed, his leather coat soaked in sweat. Across from him sat Lorenzo Rossi, quietly sipping espresso from a paper cup, watching Anthony with deep contempt.

"Where the hell is Victor?!" Anthony roared, slamming his phone onto the metal desk. "He was supposed to be here with the hard drive an hour ago!"

"Your lawyer is late, Anthony," Rossi said flatly. "And a man who is late on the night of a fifty-million-dollar closing is either incompetent or dead."

Before Anthony could respond, the heavy steel door of the shipping office burst open.

Victor Vance stumbled in, leaning heavily against the doorframe. Half of his face was covered in white surgical gauze, blood seeping through the bandages. His expensive suit was torn, and his eyes were wild with panic.

Anthony gasped. "Victor?! What happened to your face? Where is the hard drive?!"

"She took it..." Victor rasped, his voice trembling violently. "The waitress... the pregnant girl... she was working for Serafina! She smashed my face and took the drive from the safe!"

"WHAT?!" Anthony screamed, his voice cracking into an insane shriek. He grabbed Victor by the lapels, shaking him violently. "You let a nine-month-pregnant server rob a federal evidence safe?!"

"She hit me with a glass decanter!" Victor pleaded. "Serafina’s head of security was waiting in the alley! They have everything, Anthony! The offshore accounts, the police payoffs, the wiretap logs—everything!"

Lorenzo Rossi slowly stood up from his chair. The old Boston boss looked at Anthony with absolute disgust. He motioned to his three bodyguards, who immediately stepped forward, their hands moving under their coats toward their sidearms.

"You're burned, Anthony," Rossi said, his voice cold as the sleet outside. "Your fiancée just turned your entire infrastructure over to the feds. This deal is over."

"No! Lorenzo, wait!" Anthony begged, panic finally breaking through his arrogant posture. "I can fix this! I have fifty men in this city! I'll hunt Serafina down and kill her before she reaches the Federal Building!"

"You won't have to hunt for me, Anthony."

The loudspeaker system of the warehouse suddenly crackled to life, echoing throughout the vast, cavernous space.

Serafina’s voice, crystal clear, elegant, and chillingly amplified, resonated from every speaker.

"I am already here."

Anthony’s heart stopped. He spun around, looking through the glass walls of the office out into the main warehouse floor.

The heavy overhead bay doors of the warehouse slowly began to roll upward with a deafening mechanical grind.

Framed against the blinding white headlights of four massive black armored trucks stood Serafina DiMaggio.

She wore a sleek black leather trench coat, her hair pulled back into her signature flawless chignon. She walked into the warehouse with absolute, calm authority, completely unbothered by the sleet blowing through the open doors.

Beside her walked Frank Vance, holding a high-caliber tactical rifle. But behind them was something that made every mobster in the room go utterly rigid.

Flanking Serafina were fifty heavily armed federal agents from the FBI Tactical Response Team, alongside two dozen uniformed Chicago Police officers, their weapons raised, red laser sights cutting through the dim, smoky air of the warehouse.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!" tactical loudspeakers bellowed from the armored trucks.

Panic exploded across the warehouse floor. Lorenzo Rossi’s Boston mercenaries immediately threw their hands up, dropping their weapons onto the concrete floor. They were professional criminals; they knew when a game was lost.

Anthony’s men looked at the red laser dots dancing across their chests, looked at the fifty federal agents surrounding them, and slowly lowered their automatic rifles one by one.

Inside the glass office, Anthony stared at the scene in absolute horror. "No... no, no, no!" he whimpered.

Serafina walked slowly toward the glass office. The federal agents formed a protective wall around her, but they didn't touch her; she wasn't a suspect. She was the star witness.

She stepped through the office door. The air inside was freezing, but the heat of Anthony’s terror was palpable.

"Serafina..." Anthony choked out, backing away until his knees hit the metal desk. "Please... Serafina, baby... we can talk about this! We're family! We're getting married in three months!"

Serafina stopped three feet away from him. She looked down at the man she had spent years building up, feeling nothing but pity and profound disgust.

"We were never family, Anthony," Serafina said quietly, her voice carrying over the sound of police sirens wailing outside. "You were simply an ambitious man who thought he could use my mind to build an empire, and then throw me away when the consequences arrived."

"I loved you!" Anthony lied desperately, tears finally streaming down his face.

"You loved power," Serafina corrected smoothly. "And you lacked the intelligence to keep it."

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the diamond engagement ring Anthony had given her two years prior—a massive, six-carat stone that had cost half a million dollars.

She held it out over the desk and simply let go.

The ring landed on the hard metal surface with a sharp, hollow clink, rolling to a stop against Anthony's trembling hand.

"Special Agent Miller," Serafina said, turning to the lead FBI agent standing behind her. "This is Anthony Marletta. You will find his master ledger, his offshore access keys, and the signed bribe documents on the hard drive I provided two hours ago."

Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Anthony Marletta, you are under arrest for racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, and tax evasion. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the steel cuffs clicked tightly around Anthony’s wrists, he began to scream, kicking and thrashing as the agents dragged him out of the office.

"YOU BITCH!" Anthony shrieked, his voice echoing frantically across the warehouse. "YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME! YOU'RE NOTHING WITHOUT ME! NOTHING!"

Serafina didn't even turn around to watch him be dragged away.

She turned her attention to Lorenzo Rossi, who was standing quietly in the corner, his hands resting on his head as an agent stepped up to cuff him.

Rossi looked at Serafina, a bloody, bitter smile spreading across his old face. "You played us all, didn't you, Vipera? You set Anthony up, you cleared your own name with the feds, and you took down the entire Chicago outfit in a single night."

"Anthony set himself up, Lorenzo," Serafina replied calmly. "I simply made sure the right people were paying attention."

"And what happens to Chicago now?" Rossi asked, leaning in as he was led away. "The underworld doesn't like a vacuum, Serafina. Someone has to run the streets."

May you like

Serafina adjusted the collar of her black coat, her eyes cold, bright, and utterly ruthless.

"The streets are changing, Lorenzo," Serafina whispered. "And for the first time in history... they are going to be run legally."
