Chapter 5 - The Reckoning on the Cliffs

The wind whipped Celeste’s disheveled hair around her face as she stepped out onto the narrow granite ledge. Below them, a hundred feet down, the freezing grey waves of the Atlantic crashed against jagged black rocks.

“Get away from him, Celeste,” Meredith said, stepping firmly between the pistol and Thaddeus’s wheelchair, her hands protectively covering her unborn child.

Celeste laughed—a sharp, hysterical sound that was swallowed by the roar of the sea.

“Look at you,” Celeste sneered, her gun pointing directly at Meredith’s chest. “A penniless, pregnant nurse, standing on a cliff, trying to play hero. Do you have any idea what you took from me? I was supposed to be the queen of this coast! I was supposed to own everything!”

“You never cared about August, and you certainly never cared about his father,” Meredith said, her voice dropping into that quiet, absolute dignity that had shattered Celeste’s pride in the foyer. “You only cared about the power his name could give you. But power built on cruelty always collapses, Celeste.”

“Shut up!” Celeste screamed, her finger tightening on the trigger. “Shut your mouth! You ruined everything!”

Thaddeus’s left hand gripped the armrest of his chair. With an incredible effort of will that defied his paralysis, the old man let out a low, guttural roar from his throat, trying to lean forward to shield Meredith with his own frail body.

“No, Mr. Halloway, stay back!” Meredith pleaded, holding him steady.

“Say goodbye to your bastard child, nurse,” Celeste spat, raising the gun to align with Meredith’s head.

TIRES SCREECHED on the driveway above the cliff.

Before Celeste could pull the trigger, a dark figure leaped from the upper terrace wall thirty feet above, landing hard on the granite ledge with the impact of a falling meteor.

It was August.

He didn't hesitate. Before Celeste could even turn her head, August’s broad hand clamped around the barrel of the pistol like an iron vise, wrenching it from her fingers and throwing it over the cliff into the churning ocean below.

Celeste shrieked in terror as August caught her by the front of her coat, lifting her off her feet and slamming her back against the damp stone wall of the cave entrance.

August’s face was an engine of pure, unadulterated vengeance. His eyes were black, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his neck looked like steel cables.

“August!” Celeste gasped, choking as his hand tightened around her collar. “August, please! She made me do it! She tricked me—”

“If you speak another word,” August whispered, his voice so terrifyingly quiet that even the wind seemed to stop, “I will drop you into the sea.”

Celeste froze, completely paralyzed by the absolute certainty that he meant every single word. She began to weep hysterically, her arrogant facade entirely destroyed.

Behind them, Marcus and six heavily armed Halloway security officers came rushing down the cliff path, having already secured the mansion and subdued Victor Ashford’s men.

“Take her,” August commanded, throwing Celeste toward Marcus as if she were a bag of trash. “Hand her and her father over to the federal prosecutors. Give them the Zurich ledgers. Ensure neither of them ever sees the sun again.”

“Understood, boss,” Marcus said, dragging a weeping, ruined Celeste up the path in handcuffs.

August turned around instantly.

The terrifying rage in his eyes vanished, replaced in an instant by raw, trembling vulnerability. He rushed over to Meredith, dropping to his knees on the cold granite ledge.

“Meredith,” he gasped, his hands trembling as he checked her face, her arms, her belly. “Are you hurt? Did she touch you? Tell me!”

Meredith looked at him, the exhaustion finally catching up to her. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she shook her head. “I’m okay... we’re okay. Your father... he saved us, August.”

August looked over at Thaddeus.

The old man sat in his wheelchair, breathing heavily, but his grey eyes were bright with triumph. Thaddeus raised his left hand and tapped August’s shoulder twice.

Yes. We won.

August let out a long, shuddering breath. He leaned forward and wrapped his broad arms around Meredith, pulling her tight against his chest. He buried his face in her neck, holding her as if she were the only real thing in a world of shadows.

May you like

“Thank God,” August choked out, his voice cracking with emotion. “Thank God.”

Meredith wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, burying her face in his jacket, feeling the powerful, rhythmic beat of his heart. For the first time in her life, amidst the smoke, the storm, and the crashing sea, she felt completely, utterly safe.
