Chapter 2 - The Rising Tide

The commotion at the main terrace was immediate. Bianca had run back up the stone steps, tears artistically smeared across her cheeks, screaming that Elena had tripped and plunged into the deep water during a clumsy fit of dizziness. Security guards scrambled toward the docks with life rings. Dante Moretti himself strode out of the drawing room, his sharp, predatory eyes scanning the water with a cold, calculating intensity.

“Where is she?” Dante demanded, grabbing Bianca by the arm.

“By the far pier, Dante! She lost her footing—she was carrying glasses and just... went right over,” Bianca lied smoothly, trembling with a performance worthy of a Hollywood stage. “I tried to grab her, I swear I did, but she sank so fast!”

Dante stared at the dark water, a muscle ticking in his jaw. He didn't believe in accidents, especially not at Villa Moretti. He signaled two of his most trusted men, Marcus and Luca, to comb the shoreline.

Yet, as the minutes ticked by and rescue boats swept the surface, no body was found. Only a single pink uniform blouse floating near the pilings, and a pair of sensible work shoes resting neatly on the wood as if placed there by design.

Unbeknownst to them, a mile away on the secluded northern bank of the massive lake, a figure crawled out of the reeds.

Elena lay on the damp earth, coughing violently as lake water poured from her lungs. Her body ached from the cold, but her mind was terrifyingly sharp. She stripped off the heavy, ruined apron and wrung out her dark curls. She knew every inch of this estate—every hidden drainage pipe, every old smuggling tunnel dug by previous owners decades ago, and every blind spot in the surveillance grid.

She did not return to the mansion through the front gates. Instead, she slipped through the rusted iron access grate of the subterranean service tunnels that ran directly beneath the grand ballroom.

In the shadows of the basement, surrounded by spare furniture, old ledgers, and crates of imported wine, Elena found her hidden sanctuary. For four years, she had maintained a small storage locker down here—not for stolen goods, but for records. Every financial discrepancy she had ever spotted, every illicit phone number scribbled down, every photocopy of sensitive documents left unsecured in Dante’s study, and every ledger page detailing Bianca’s massive gambling debts and offshore accounts.

Elena dried herself with a spare linen towel, pulled on a dry black utility jumpsuit she kept hidden behind a stack of wine racks, and stared into the cracked mirror hanging over a utility sink.

The frightened, overweight maid who had taken insults with bowed head was gone. In her place stood a woman armed with the most dangerous weapon in the world: absolute truth.

Upstairs, the party continued under a veneer of forced gaiety. Guests whispered about the tragic drowning of the clumsy servant girl, offering shallow condolences to Dante before returning to their champagne. Bianca stood beside Dante, sipping a martini, her confidence fully restored. She believed the problem had been solved, washed away into the dark depths of the lake.

She had no idea that Elena Rossi was currently walking up the service stairs behind the ballroom walls, holding a heavy manila folder containing the entire blueprint of the Moretti syndicate’s financial ruin.
