Chapter 2 - The Velvet TrapClara didn't hesitate. Every instinct she possessed—honed by years of dodging abusive stepfathers, dodging loan sharks, and surviving the brutal underbelly of the city—screamed at her to run. But as she watched Adrienne Marquetti lean down to kiss his new bride beneath a shower of golden sparks, she realized the terrifying gravity of the situation.

Aldo Falconee wasn’t just a guest. He was a trojan horse.
If Aldo successfully eliminated Adrienne during the reception, the fragile peace between the Marquettis and the Falconees would instantly shatter. A full-scale syndicate war would erupt across the entire eastern seaboard, burning down neighborhoods, destroying innocent lives, and leaving hundreds dead in the crossfire—including Clara and her ailing mother.
She had to stop him. Or at least, she had to warn someone who had the power to act.
Creeping along the shadowed perimeter of the stone terrace, Clara avoided the roving patrols of private security guards. The Marquetti security detail was notoriously ruthless, trained to shoot first and ask questions to the empty air later. If she was caught trespassing again—especially after Madam Elena had explicitly ordered her banned from the property—she would be lucky if they only broke her legs.
She needed to reach Adrienne. But getting past the inner circle of elite guests, corrupt politicians, and heavily armed capos was practically impossible for a young woman dressed in a faded maid’s uniform with dirt smudged across her cheek.
Her opportunity arose when the kitchen staff rushed out carrying massive silver platters of poached salmon and truffle risotto. Clara ducked behind a tall waiter carrying a stack of champagne flutes, slipping through the heavy swinging doors of the back kitchen just as the chaotic symphony of culinary preparation reached its peak.
The kitchen was a war zone of copper pots, hissing steam, and stressed sous-chefs shouting in Italian.
"More ice! Where are the oysters?" the head chef roared, his face slick with sweat.
Clara grabbed a clean white apron hanging near the pantry sink, slung it over her shoulders, and quickly pinned her wild brown hair up into a tight, professional bun. She grabbed a damp cloth and began wiping down the stainless-steel prep counter with furious energy, making herself look as though she belonged there.
It worked—for about forty seconds.
"You!"
A sharp, shrill voice cut through the clatter of pots and pans.
Clara froze. She didn't even need to turn around to recognize it. The scent of heavy French jasmine and bitter malice could only belong to one person.
Madam Elena Marquetti swept into the kitchen like a storm cloud of black silk and diamonds. Her eyes, sharp as obsidian shards, immediately locked onto Clara.
"What in God's name are you doing back in my house?" Elena hissed, stepping forward until she was inches away. The kitchen staff abruptly stopped working, turning their heads to watch the spectacle. "I told my guards to throw you out into the highway. Did you think you could sneak back in to steal the silver spoons, you little beggar?"
"Madam Marquetti, please," Clara kept her voice low, desperate, trying not to draw more attention. "There’s an emergency. Your son’s life—"
"Silence!" Elena slapped the counter with her palm, her face flushing with furious indignation. "How dare you speak his name! You are a pest, a wretched little parasite that my domestic agency somehow smuggled into my estate. You were fired, humiliated, and cast out. And now you dare crawl back into my kitchen like a cockroach?"
"Listen to me, please!" Clara pleaded, her voice rising in panic as she grabbed Elena's heavily bejeweled wrist. "Aldo Falconee! Your new in-law! He just went to the tool shed. He planted something there. He's going to kill Adrienne tonight!"
The kitchen went dead silent. Even the gas burners seemed to hiss more softly.
For a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine shock crossed Elena’s face. But it was immediately replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated contempt. The idea that a mere scullery maid would dare accuse the respected, quiet elder of the Falconee family—their esteemed business partners—of treason was beyond comprehension. It was an insult to Elena's pristine judgment.
"You insolent, delusional little bitch," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with rage. She turned to the two hulking security guards standing by the pantry door. "Take her. Drag her down to the harbor boathouse and tie her to the pilings. Let the rising tide teach her respect for her betters."
The two massive guards stepped forward, their heavy hands clamping onto Clara’s arms with bone-crushing force.

"No! Wait!" Clara thrashed against them, kicking out blindly. "Check the shed! Go look at the tool shed right now! He left a gun under the floorboards!"
"Shut her up," Elena sneered, turning her back with a flick of her wrist. "And throw her in the water when you're done. I won't have my son's wedding day ruined by a lunatic."
