Chapter 4 - The Bait in the Lion’s DenThree days had passed since the attack, and the Vancini estate had transformed from a home into a fortified military installation. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day, thermal cameras scanned the tree lines, and every entry point was monitored with paranoid precision.

Yet, inside the nursery on the second floor, an eerie, artificial calm prevailed.

Sophia had not spoken another word since the night of the attack. The single syllable—Him—seemed to have exhausted her fragile vocal cords, but her eyes were no longer vacant. They were sharp, watchful, tracking Clara’s every movement around the room with a quiet, fierce loyalty.

Clara sat at the low wooden play table, cutting construction paper into paper hearts while Sophia watched intently.

The heavy door creaked open, and Dante stepped inside. He had changed into a fresh charcoal-gray suit, his hair slightly damp from the morning shower, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire syndicate boss. But when he looked at his daughter, the razor-sharp edges of his persona melted away.

“How is she?” Dante asked softly, walking over and kneeling beside Sophia’s chair. He gently stroked a strand of dark hair away from her forehead.

“She’s quiet, but she’s eating,” Clara said, looking up at him from across the table. She held up a blue paper heart she had just cut out. “We’re making a fortress. To keep the bad uncles away.”

A faint, warm shadow of a smile crossed Dante’s face. He reached out, his warm fingers accidentally brushing against Clara’s knuckles as he took the paper heart from her hand. A sudden, electric jolt of static electricity seemed to pass between them, making Clara’s breath hitch. She quickly pulled her hand back, a sudden flush warming her cheeks.

Dante didn't look away immediately. His dark eyes lingered on her face, noting the dark circles under her eyes, the fierce determination in her jaw, and the way she had seamlessly woven herself into the broken fabric of his family.

“We found him,” Dante said quietly, shifting his tone back to business.

Clara’s breath caught. “Julian?”

“Marcus tracked a secure satellite ping from one of Julian’s burner phones,” Dante said, standing up and towering over the table. “He’s hiding out in an abandoned private yacht club marina on the industrial west pier. He thinks he’s safe there, waiting to meet with our rivals to sell the stolen Vancini asset portfolios.”

“Are you going to kill him?” Clara asked, her voice dropping to a whisper so Sophia wouldn't understand.

“I’m going to end this,” Dante said simply, his eyes turning to ice. “Once and for all.”

“Take me with you,” Clara said suddenly, standing up from her chair.

Dante frowned instantly, shaking his head. “Absolutely not. It’s a war zone. I didn't bring you into this house to use you as a shield or a tactical asset.”

“I’m not asking to be a tactical asset,” Clara fired back, stepping closer to him, her eyes flashing with a stubborn fire that mirrored his own. “Julian knows me. He knows I heard him that night. If he’s cornered, he’s going to tie up loose ends—and that includes me and Sophia. Besides... Sophia trusts me. If you go charging in there blind, you’re walking into a trap.”

Dante stared down at her, a muscle twitching in his jaw. He wanted to scream at her, to order her to stay behind locked doors where she was safe. But deep down, he knew she was right. Julian wasn't just a traitor; he was cunning, paranoid, and desperate.

Before Dante could answer, a small, warm hand tugged gently at the cuff of his trousers.

Both adults looked down.

Sophia was standing beside her chair. She wasn't trembling. Her green eyes were wide, steady, and blazing with an eerie, mature clarity. She looked up at her father, and then slowly pointed a small finger first at Clara, and then at Dante’s jacket pocket—where the spare car keys lay.

A heavy, profound silence filled the room. Sophia didn't need to speak. Her gesture was a command.

Dante looked from his daughter back to Clara, a slow, resignation settling over his rugged features. He let out a heavy, defeated breath.

“Fine,” Dante muttered, his voice thick with reluctance. “You come with me. But you stay within arm’s reach of me every single second. Understood?”

Clara nodded firmly. “Understood.”
