Chapter 6 - A New Balance

Six months later, Laura had a new staff, the medical debt collectors had permanently closed my file, and my name was no longer synonymous with invisible poverty. Perry Logistics had completed its total transition into a fully legitimate, publicly traded enterprise, with me sitting permanently as Chief Financial Officer. The transformation had stunned the city's financial sector, but no one was more surprised by my trajectory than Stella Perry, who had been quietly packed off to London to manage international public relations under strict supervision. On a crisp autumn evening, I stood on the balcony of the Michigan Avenue office, watching the city lights reflect off the dark waters of the river. Footsteps echoed softly behind me, and a familiar weight settled over my shoulders as Leandro draped his wool coat around me. He handed me a fresh cup of coffee—black, no sugar—and leaned against the railing beside me. "You know," Leandro murmured, looking down at the fifty-dollar bill I had framed and hung in a small mahogany case near my office desk, "that was the most expensive cup of coffee I ever bought." I smiled, leaning slightly against his shoulder, feeling the solid, unshakable warmth of a life finally balanced. "You got a bargain, Mr. Perry," I replied softly. "I saved you millions." Leandro smiled back—a rare, genuine expression that belonged only to us—and pulled me close as the Chicago wind swept past, leaving us standing firmly at the head of the room.
