Chapter 6 - A New DawnThree weeks later.

The autumn sun shone brilliantly over Manhattan, casting a golden glow across the towering glass-and-steel skyscraper that served as the global headquarters of Moretti Global Enterprises.

Inside a spacious, sunlit executive office on the fiftieth floor, Leora Higgins stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the bustling cityscape below. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer and silk blouse, her dark hair styled neatly. The bruises and exhaustion of that stormy night in the Catskills were long gone, replaced by an aura of undeniable poise and power.

The door behind her clicked open, and footsteps crossed the plush carpet.

“The board meeting wrapped up twenty minutes ago,” a deep, familiar voice said warmly.

Leora turned to see Leo Moretti walking toward her. He was dressed in a sharp, immaculate bespoke suit, looking completely recovered from his gunshot wounds, though a faint, jagged scar remained hidden beneath his collar.

“And?” Leora raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms with a playful smile. “Did the regional directors agree to the restructuring terms, or do I need to threaten them with another cleaning audit?”

Leo chuckled, stopping a few feet away from her. “They agreed unanimously. Nobody argues with the woman who single-handedly saved the heir apparent, dismantled a syndicate coup, and then balanced the corporate logistics budget better than our CFO.”

Leora smiled, shaking her head. “I told you, Mr. Moretti—I’m very good at keeping things organized.”

“It’s Leo, remember?” he reminded her gently, his dark eyes softening as he looked down at her.

In the weeks following the incident, everything had changed. The Moretti syndicate had undergone a massive, bloodless purge of its corrupt elements, transitioning aggressively into legitimate real estate development, shipping logistics, and international commerce under Leo’s reformed leadership.

And Leora? She hadn't been given hush money or dismissed. Instead, Leo had personally appointed her as the Chief Operations Director of Moretti Logistics—a role that came with a six-figure salary, elite security clearance, and a future she had never dared to dream of.

More importantly, her sister Sophie had been transferred to a private medical facility in Boston, where she had successfully received her kidney transplant two weeks ago and was currently making a full, healthy recovery, completely free of medical debt.

“How is Sophie doing?” Leo asked, reading the warmth in her expression.

“She’s walking laps around the hospital ward today,” Leora said, her voice thick with emotion. “The doctors say she’ll be discharged by the weekend.”

Leo stepped closer, gently taking her hand in his. His thumb brushed softly across her knuckles.

“Tell her that the penthouse apartment downtown is fully furnished, and the medical staff is already stationed on retainer,” Leo said quietly, his gaze locked onto hers with intense, unyielding sincerity. “And tell her that her sister doesn’t ever have to clean up anyone else’s mess ever again.”

Leora looked up into his eyes, feeling the steady, reassuring warmth of his grip. The ghosts of her past—the cramped Albany apartment, the crushing weight of bills, the terrifying night in the freezing Catskill storm—felt like a lifetime away.

She smiled, her fingers intertwining naturally with his.

“I think she’s going to like the penthouse,” Leora whispered softly. “As long as I get to set the house rules.”

Leo laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed through the sunlit office—as the morning light washed over them both, marking the beginning of a brand-new empire built not on fear, but on survival, loyalty, and an unbreakable bond.
