Chapter 5 - The Siege of East Hampton

Although Vivian and Falcone were in federal custody, the snake of the Brooklyn Syndicate had not been entirely decapitated.

At 2:00 a.m. that night, three black, unmarked vans pulled up to the outer tree line of the East Hampton estate.

Falcone’s second-in-command, a ruthless hitman named Hector, had received a final, desperate order before Falcone’s arrest: If the deal falls apart, take the twins. Use them as human shields to force Declan to drop the federal charges.

Eight armed mercenaries dressed in tactical gear stepped out of the vans, carrying silenced automatic rifles and thermal breaching charges. They cut through the perimeter fence, moving silently through the thick fog toward the rear of the mansion.

Inside the nursery wing, Nora sat near the girls' bed.

She hadn't slept. Her instincts, honed by years of working emergency shifts in volatile hospital wards, kept her on high alert.

Suddenly, a faint click echoed from the security panel on the wall. The green indicator light flickered red.

The primary perimeter fence had been breached.

Nora didn't panic. She immediately pressed the emergency lockdown button hidden beneath the nightstand.

A heavy, solid-steel blast door slid down from the ceiling with a loud thud, completely sealing the nursery off from the main hallway. At the same time, floor-to-ceiling iron shutters snapped shut over the windows, locking the room into an impenetrable panic bunker.

Lily and Rose sat up in bed, rubbing their eyes, terrified by the loud metallic sounds.

"Nora?" Lily whimpered. "Is the monster back?"

Nora rushed to the bed, pulling both girls into her arms and lifting them off the mattress. "No, sweethearts. The monster is gone forever. We’re just playing a hide-and-seek game, okay? Come with me."

Nora carried the girls into the nursery’s reinforced walk-in safe room, pulling the heavy steel door shut behind them and locking the digital bolt from the inside.

Outside the nursery, the mansion erupted into gunfire.

Declan’s security forces, led by Jonah Pike, intercepted the mercenaries in the grand hallway. The sharp crack of automatic weapons fire and the flash of muzzle flares illuminated the darkness of the estate.

Declan moved through the halls like a phantom. Dressed in dark tactical gear, holding a custom heavy pistol, he fired with lethal, terrifying precision. Within three minutes, four of Falcone’s mercenaries were neutralized on the marble floor of the foyer.

Hector, realizing his team was being slaughtered, rushed up the grand staircase toward the nursery wing, carrying a thermite breaching charge. He slapped the explosive device against the steel blast door protecting the nursery, preparing to detonate it.

"Moving another step would be a mistake," a voice rasped from the dark corridor behind him.

Hector spun around, raising his rifle, but Declan was already there.

Declan grabbed the barrel of Hector’s rifle, twisting it with immense force, disarming the hitman in a single fluid motion. Before Hector could pull his sidearm, Declan slammed him against the wall, striking him viciously in the ribs, then grabbing him by the throat and lifting him off his feet.

"You came into my house," Declan snarled, his eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic fury. "You brought guns near my children."

"Declan... wait—" Hector choked out, his eyes bulging with fear.

Declan didn't wait. He drove a heavy knee into Hector’s stomach, then threw the mercenary over the balcony railing. Hector crashed onto the marble floor thirty feet below with a sickening crunch, motionless.

The mansion fell completely silent.

The remaining mercenaries outside had been wiped out by Jonah’s team. The siege was over.

Declan rushed toward the nursery door. He tapped his personal biometric code into the wall keypad. The heavy steel blast door slowly slid upward, revealing the nursery hallway.

He walked over to the safe room door, his heart pounding in his chest. "Nora! It’s me! It’s Declan!"

The digital lock clicked. The heavy steel door swung open.

Nora stood inside, holding a heavy brass lamp as a weapon, shielding Lily and Rose behind her body. Her clothes were disheveled, her hair loose, but her eyes held an fierce, unyielding protective fury that took Declan’s breath away.

When she saw Declan standing there, safe, covered in dust but unhurt, the lamp slipped from her fingers, crashing onto the rug.

Declan didn't hesitate. He stepped into the safe room, wrapped his long arms around Nora, and pulled her tightly against his chest.

Nora buried her face into his shoulder, her hands gripping his tactical vest as she let out a long, shuddering breath. He held her as if she were the most precious thing in the world, kissing the top of her hair softly.

"You kept them safe," Declan whispered, his voice trembling with rare emotion. "You kept my babies safe."

"I promised you I would," Nora sobbed quietly.

Lily and Rose ran over, wrapping their small arms around both of their legs.

"Daddy! Nora!" Rose cheered. "We won the hide-and-seek game!"

Declan dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around all three of them—his daughters and the brave, extraordinary woman who had saved his family from the darkest night of their lives.
