Chapter 5 - The War for New York

While Preston Whitmore lay in federal custody, his empire refused to die quietly.
Sloane Whitmore, driven mad by the collapse of her family's wealth and social standing, mobilized the remaining mercenaries loyal to her father. She knew that once the Black Sun ledgers were presented to the Commission at noon, the Whitmore name would be erased forever.
Her final act of desperate vengeance was aimed not at Ashton’s syndicate, but at the thing he loved most.
At 10:00 AM, two hours before the Commission hearing, a black SUV smashed through the perimeter gates of Ashton’s private Hudson Valley estate—the restored farm where Phantom had been moved for safety after the dock raid.
Sloane jumped out of the vehicle, carrying a heavy cans of gasoline and a road flare, her eyes wild with unhinged hatred.
"Burn it!" she screamed to her three armed guards. "Burn the stables! Burn the horses! Destroy everything!"
Inside the stable barn, Ren was preparing Phantom for his morning ride. When she heard the crash of the gates and the smell of gasoline wafting through the doors, her blood ran cold.
"Mica, stay inside the tack room!" Ren ordered her brother, grabbing a heavy brass pitchfork from the wall.
She stepped out into the stable aisle just as Sloane and her guards kicked open the double barn doors.
"You," Sloane spat, tossing a flare from hand to hand. "You ruined my life! You dirty little waitress! I’m going to burn you and your stupid horse to ashes!"
Sloane threw the lit flare onto a pile of dry hay near the entrance!
Flames erupted instantly, orange fire licking up the wooden walls toward the rafters!
Before the guards could advance, a sound broke through the roaring fire that made every man freeze.
It was a wild, blood-curdling war cry—a thunderous, metallic kick against oak wood that split the stable wall in two!
Phantom’s stall door exploded outward!
The twelve-hundred-pound Friesian stallion charged down the aisle like a demon unleashed from hell! His eyes rolled back in fury, his dark hooves striking the concrete floor with terrifying power!
The lead guard tried to raise his rifle, but Phantom reared up on his hind legs, striking his massive iron-shod hooves straight down onto the guard’s chest, sending the man flying twenty feet into the dirt outside!
The remaining two guards panicked, dropping their weapons and fleeing for their lives into the surrounding woods!
Sloane stumbled back onto her hands and knees, terrified, as Phantom stood over her, his giant head lowered, his nostrils flaring wide as he let out a deafening, terrifying roar of warning!
Ren walked through the smoke, her face calm, holding Phantom’s lead rope. She reached out, gently patting the stallion’s hot neck until his breathing slowed.
She looked down at Sloane, who was sobbing hysterically in the dirt, her expensive clothes covered in mud and ash.
"My father died with honor in a cold cell, Sloane," Ren said softly, looking down at the ruined heiress with pity rather than anger. "You are dying of your own malice in the mud."
Minutes later, the sirens of the state police and Ashton’s security detail echoed up the long driveway.
At noon that same day, inside the high chamber of the Obsidian Tower, Ashton Graves presented the unredacted Black Sun Ledgers to Don Carmine and the Commission elders.
The evidence was absolute. Decades of bank fraud, murder, and treason against the Commission were laid bare. Preston Whitmore was stripped of his titles, his assets were confiscated, and his seat was declared vacant forever.

Don Carmine stood up, raising a glass of dark red wine toward Ashton and Ren, who stood side-by-side at the center of the hall.
"Harrison Callaway’s name is cleared," Don Carmine proclaimed. "His family is restored. And the underworld of New York recognizes Ren Callaway as a woman of supreme honor."
