Chapter 6 - The Laughter That RemainsSix months later.

The Hudson Valley estate was radiant under the bright spring sunshine. The cherry blossom trees were in full bloom, dropping soft pink petals across the manicured green lawns and flower beds.

The estate’s grand patio was set up for a celebration.

A long table was covered with fresh flowers, tiered cakes, and colorful balloons. Grace’s mother, Nora—looking healthy, vibrant, and completely recovered after her successful treatment—sat in a wicker armchair, laughing with Leo and the estate staff.

It was Elena’s ninth birthday.

Dozens of children from the local community, along with families of Matteo’s legitimate business associates, ran across the lawn, playing games and eating ice cream.

Near the central cherry tree, a group of children gathered in a circle, cheering loudly.

In the center of the circle stood Grace and Elena.

Grace wore a yellow floral sundress that showcased her gorgeous curves, her hair glowing in the afternoon sun. Beside her, Elena stood upright, wearing a matching pink dress.

She didn't have her wheelchair.

She didn't even have her parallel bars.

Elena held a small, decorated garden broom in her hands—with a silly cardboard face painted on the handle.

“Alright, Kevin!” Elena called out, her voice bright and ringing with pure joy. “Prepare to lose!”

Elena dropped the broom, took a deep, confident breath, and took six fast, independent steps across the grass toward Grace, landing safely in Grace’s open arms.

The crowd erupted into wild applause and cheers! Nora clapped her hands, wiping tears of joy from her eyes, while Leo whistled loudly.

Grace lifted Elena into a spin, hugging her tightly. “You did it, sweet pea! Six whole steps!”

“I beat Kevin!” Elena cheered, laughing hysterically.

Standing at the edge of the patio, watching them with a glass of champagne in his hand, was Matteo. He wore a tailored light-gray suit, looking remarkably handsome, his face relaxed, filled with profound happiness.

When the kids ran off to eat birthday cake, Grace walked over to the cherry tree where Matteo was standing.

“She took six steps, Matteo,” Grace said softly, leaning against his side, resting her head against his shoulder.

Matteo set his glass down on a small table. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close, resting his chin on top of her head.

“She took six steps because she has the most amazing mother in the world,” Matteo whispered.

Grace looked up, surprised. “Mother?”

Matteo turned to face her fully. He reached into his suit jacket pocket, pulling out a small, black velvet box.

Grace’s breath caught in her throat.

Matteo dropped gracefully to one knee right there on the soft grass, beneath the falling pink cherry blossom petals. He opened the velvet box, revealing a breathtaking five-carat oval diamond ring that sparkled brilliantly under the spring sun.

“Grace Sullivan,” Matteo said, his deep voice carrying across the quiet garden, filled with intense, unwavering love. “Ten months ago, you walked into my garden with mud on your dress and a clown hat on your head, and you gave me back my daughter’s laugh. Then you gave me back my heart.”

He reached up, taking her trembling hand in his.

“Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife? Will you make this family whole forever?”

From the cake table, Elena yelled out at the top of her lungs, “SAY YES, GRACE! WE NEED MORE PAINT IN THE HOUSE!”

Everyone laughed loudly.

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Grace’s cheeks. She laughed, dropping to her knees on the grass beside him, wrapping her arms around Matteo’s neck, kissing him deeply in front of everyone.

“Yes!” Grace cried against his lips. “Yes, Matteo! A thousand times yes!”

Matteo slid the diamond ring onto her finger, lifting her up into his arms and spinning her around as the entire garden erupted into joyous cheers, applause, and celebration.

As the afternoon sun dipped low over the Hudson River, casting a warm golden glow over the estate, Matteo held his bride-to-be close to his heart. Elena ran up, wrapping her arms around both of their legs, laughing happily.

The dark days were gone. The silence was broken forever. And in its place remained only love, warmth, and the sweet, eternal sound of laughter.
