Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the NetworkOver the next month, the ripple effects of Declan’s calculated strike tore through the Boston underworld like wildfire.

Federal agents, acting on the explosive internal audit files provided anonymously by "corporate security at Walker Enterprises," raided three warehouses in South Boston, seizing millions in smuggled goods, counterfeit currency, and illegal firearms.

Tony Rossi tried to cut a deal with the U.S. Attorney’s office, attempting to implicate Declan in the broader syndicate operations. But federal prosecutors laughed him out of the room. The paper trail Declan had constructed was bulletproof: Marcus Hale and Tony Rossi were painted as rogue, isolated actors who had systematically bypassed corporate controls, victimized innocent staff members (as evidenced by my official incident report), and betrayed the Walker family's strict ethical standards.

By mid-September, I had moved back into my apartment—though my rent had mysteriously been paid in full for the next two years, and a discreet security system had been installed by two polite men in dark suits who refused to answer any questions about who sent them.

My mother’s memory care facility called twice a week with glowing updates. They had upgraded her room, assigned her a dedicated specialist, and informed me that her balance was entirely prepaid through the next decade.

Yet, despite my new apartment and my enforced vacation, I found myself missing the Walker estate.

Or rather, I missed the quiet man who sat in the high-backed wing chair reading ledgers while I polished the mahogany.

On a crisp October Tuesday, exactly eight weeks after the incident, I received a text message from an unknown number.
