Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Alibi

The dining room temperature seemed to drop twenty degrees.
Brooke’s hands fell away from Dominic’s shoulders. She took a sharp step backward, her Crimson blazer suddenly looking like armor under siege.
"That’s a lie," Brooke spat, her voice rising in pitch as she pointed a manicured finger directly at Emma. "She’s a hired maid! She’s covering for Natalie’s hysterical breakdown! You’re going to take the word of a domestic servant over your own future wife?"
Dominic didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a small, sleek digital recorder, and placed it gently in the exact center of the mahogany table.
He pressed a single button.
Crystal-clear, amplified audio filled the silent dining room.
“Think carefully,” Brooke’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged space. “There’s nothing to think about.”
“Then perhaps you and Noah should begin thinking about another place to live.”
Brooke stood frozen, her eyes dilated with absolute horror as the recording played every single threat, every demand, and every cruel ultimatum she had delivered in the early hours of the morning.
When the audio clicked off, the room was so quiet you could hear the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.
Dominic slowly stood up from his chair. He was taller than Brooke, broader, and the terrifying aura of authority that made hardened criminals across New England lower their eyes now filled the entire room.
"My mother’s trust," Dominic said, his voice barely above a whisper, "was established to protect the people I love. Not to serve as a dowry for a woman who thinks she can intimidate a nine-year-old child in his own home."
Brooke’s polished facade completely shattered. The mask dropped, revealing the cold, calculating opportunist underneath.
"You recorded me," she whispered, her voice shaking with rage. "You set me up. You came back early just to spy on me like a paranoid monster!"
"I came back early because my nephew called me crying," Dominic corrected sharply. "And what I found was a thief trying to steal from my family before the ink on our marriage license was even dry."
Brooke’s eyes flashed with venom. She grabbed her leather folder off the sideboard, clutching it to her chest like a shield.
"You think you can humiliate me?" she hissed, her voice turning shrill. "You think you can toss me out like some common piece of trash? My brother represents half the corporate bondholders in Boston! If you break this engagement publicly, my family will pull every line of credit tied to your shipping terminals by Monday morning!"
Dominic let out a cold, humorless laugh.
"Let them try," Dominic said, walking toward the double doors and pulling them wide open. Standing outside in the hallway were two armed security guards and Julian Parker, the family attorney, holding a thick leather briefcase.
Julian looked older, his face pale as he surveyed the scene inside the dining room.

"Julian," Dominic said without looking back. "Revoke the civil marriage registry paperwork immediately. File an immediate audit on all legal communications between Miss Harrington and any external Boston firms. And escort my former fiancée off the property before I decide to charge her with attempted extortion and forgery."
Brooke opened her mouth to scream, but the two security guards stepped forward, blocking her path. Realizing that the empire she had tried to steal had just collapsed around her, she gathered the remnants of her shattered dignity, tossed her leather folder onto the floor, and marched past Dominic without a single word, her heels clicking a furious rhythm down the grand hallway.
