Chapter 6 - A New HorizonSix months later.

The autumn sun over Boston was brilliant, turning the brick facades of Beacon Hill into a warm mosaic of amber and gold.
On the fourth-floor terrace of a newly restored historic brick building overlooking the Public Garden, a private cocktail party was underway. It wasn't a charity gala or a society fundraiser filled with people who judged others by their dress size or pedigree. It was the grand opening of Hart-Carter Financial Strategies—an independent corporate restructuring firm founded and wholly owned by Evelyn Carter.
The rooms were filled with respected attorneys, independent investors, and business leaders who treated Evelyn with the fierce, unreserved respect she had always deserved.
Evelyn wore a tailored emerald-green silk dress that hugged her curves with absolute confidence, her mother’s sapphire ring gleaming on her left hand alongside a new, delicate gold band she had chosen for herself.
She stood near the glass railing, looking out over the city.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her on the hardwood floor.
"You know," a deep, familiar voice said, "for a woman who swore she was done with high-society parties, you throw a magnificent opening night."
Evelyn turned around.
Roman DeLuca stood leaning against the doorframe, holding a glass of sparkling water. He wasn't wearing his usual dark mob-boss armor; he wore a sharp navy blazer over an open-collared white shirt, looking every bit the formidable, dangerous man who had walked into her wedding and changed her life forever.
"This isn't a high-society party, Roman," Evelyn corrected with a smile, walking over to him. "This is a hostile takeover of Boston’s financial consulting sector."
Roman chuckled, stepping closer. "And how are the profit margins on a hostile takeover?"
"Exceptional," she replied. "We just secured the commercial shipping contracts for the entire northern coast. Turns out, when you don't have to spend your energy managing a narcissist’s debt, you have a lot more time to conquer the market."
Roman’s dark eyes danced with amusement and profound, unmasked affection. He reached out, gently catching a strand of her dark hair and tucking it behind her ear.
"I always knew you were dangerous, Evelyn," he murmured, his voice dropping into that low, thrilling register that only she heard. "I just didn't realize how much damage you’d do to my heart."
Evelyn looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat not out of fear or uncertainty, but from the exhilarating, solid weight of a love built on equality, respect, and shared strength.
She placed her hand over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm beneath his shirt.
"Careful, Mr. DeLuca," Evelyn whispered, a playful spark in her hazel eyes. "I check every contract before I sign it."
May you like
Roman smiled, pulling her closer against his chest as the afternoon sun dipped below the Boston skyline, casting a golden light over their future.
"Take all the time you need, Evelyn," he said softly, kissing the top of her head. "I'm not going anywhere."
