Chapter 5 - Blood, Steel, and Sanctuary

The metallic click of the Vanguard guards’ suppressed firearms echoed through the library like the snapping of dry bones.

Before the guards could raise their barrels, Wyatt moved with a speed and ferocity that stunned everyone in the room, including his father. He lunged across the mahogany desk, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick and hurling it directly into the face of the lead guard. The heavy metal connected with a sickening crunch, sending the man sprawling backward over an armchair.

The second guard whipped his pistol toward Wyatt, but Micah reacted instantly, tackling the man mid-stride. They crashed heavily onto the Persian rug, rolling across the floor in a brutal struggle for the weapon.

“Get down!” Delaney screamed, grabbing Phoebe by the shoulders and dragging her behind the heavy oak library table.

Celeste’s triumphant smile vanished instantly. “Kill them! Kill all of them!” she shrieked, panic piercing her polished demeanor.

Dr. Rusk scrambled on all fours toward the door, trying to make a break for the hallway, but Damon moved with lethal precision. In two strides, Damon intercepted the doctor, grabbing him by the collar and hoisting him into the air before hurling him directly into the path of the struggling second guard, distracting him long enough for Micah to wrench the pistol free and pistol-whip the man unconscious.

The first guard shook off the blow from the brass candlestick, blood streaming from his broken nose, and raised his pistol toward Wyatt, who was still standing unprotected behind the desk.

Eliza didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the heavy toxicology folder and hurled it at the guard’s eyes, blinding him for a split second.

That second was all Damon needed.

With a roar of pure primal fury, Damon closed the distance between them, slamming his fist into the guard’s jaw with bone-shattering force. The man collapsed like a felled tree, unconscious before he hit the floor.

Silence slammed back into the library, broken only by the heavy, ragged breathing of the family and the groans of Dr. Rusk huddled near the bookshelf.

Celeste backed up against the heavy double doors, her face drained of all color, her hands trembling as she realized her elite guards had been neutralized in under thirty seconds by a family she thought she had completely fractured.

Damon stepped over the unconscious guard, his fists still clenched, his dark eyes locked entirely on his ex-wife. He looked like an apex predator that had been cornered and was now ready to tear down the world to protect his pack.

“You...” Damon whispered, his voice vibrating with venom. “You tried to kill my children. You tried to destroy the only person who ever truly loved them.”

Celeste’s eyes darted toward the door, but Wyatt stepped directly into her path, blocking the exit with the same cold, unyielding glare his father possessed. Delaney stood beside her brother, holding a heavy glass paperweight in her hand, while Micah stood behind them, keeping the recovered pistol leveled safely at the floor.

“You can’t touch me, Damon,” Celeste stammered, backing away until her spine hit the heavy oak doors. “Vanguard has a full tactical unit stationed at the estate gates. If I don't walk out of here in ten minutes, they storm the house and kill every last one of you—including the unborn brat in her belly.”

“They won't have the chance,” a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed from the hallway.

The library side-door swung open. Standing in the threshold was Viktor Vance, the aging but fiercely loyal head of Northcott’s internal security detail, flanked by half a dozen elite syndical enforcers carrying submachine guns.

“Gate perimeter secured, boss,” Viktor reported crisply, nodding to Damon. “Vanguard tactical units tried to breach the west entrance ten minutes ago. We neutralized their advance and locked down the compound. No one gets in or out without our say-so.”

Celeste’s knees finally buckled. She slid down the heavy oak doors, staring up in absolute terror at the men she thought she had easily outmaneuvered.

Damon didn't look at her. Instead, he slowly turned around and walked back toward the center of the library where Eliza stood, her hand resting protectively over her belly, surrounded by Wyatt, Delaney, Micah, and Phoebe.

The four children looked at their father with a complex mix of wariness, exhaustion, and deep, unspoken solidarity. They had chosen Eliza over him. They had walked away from the Northcott dynasty to stand with the woman who had raised them.

Damon stopped two paces away from Eliza. For the first time in his life, the powerful syndicate boss dropped to one knee on the hardwood floor, right in front of his pregnant wife.

“I was a fool,” Damon said, his voice raw, completely devoid of pride or authority. He looked up into Eliza’s steady, compassionate eyes. “I let paranoia blind me. I let my mother’s ghosts dictate my heart. I signed divorce papers to punish you, when you were the only real thing holding this shattered family together.”

Eliza looked down at him. The anger that had sustained her through the morning was gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable strength.

“You almost lost them, Damon,” Eliza said softly, gesturing to the four children standing behind her. “You almost lost everything because you couldn't trust the people who loved you.”

“I know,” Damon whispered, his head bowing low. “I don't deserve you. I don't deserve any of them. But please... don't walk away. Let me spend the rest of my life earning back what you’ve all already given me.”

Phoebe stepped out from behind Eliza, her lower lip trembling. She looked at her father kneeling in the dust and shattered glass of the library, then looked at Eliza. Slowly, hesitantly, Phoebe reached out and placed her small hand on Eliza’s shoulder, then reached down with her other hand to touch Damon’s shoulder.

Wyatt, Delaney, and Micah exchanged glances. One by one, they stepped closer, closing the circle around Eliza and Damon, forming an unbroken wall of family that no syndicate, no betrayal, and no ghost could ever break again.
