Chapter 3 - The Golden CageThe transition from a freezing, drafty apartment to the sprawling Moretti estate on the Gold Coast was nothing short of whiplash.

Alessandro didn't give her a choice. Within twenty-four hours, she and Leo were moved into a sunlit, fully staffed guest wing of the historic limestone mansion overlooking the lake. Leo had his own study, a computer setup that made his jaw drop, and a guaranteed placement at a top-tier private university the following fall. Her mother was transferred to a private, state-of-the-art medical suite with top-tier specialists attending to her every need.

And Mabel found herself wrapped in silk and cashmere.

Yet, the gilded cage came with a storm of its own.

Word leaked through Chicago’s high-society underground that Alessandro Moretti—the most feared, untouchable syndicate king in the Midwest—had taken in a penniless former waitress as his primary companion.

The backlash was swift and venomous.

Three days after her arrival, Alessandro invited her to accompany him to a high-profile charity gala at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was meant to be her formal introduction to the city’s elite.

Mabel wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored emerald-green silk gown that Alessandro had commissioned for her, her dark hair styled in elegant waves, her posture straight. But the moment they walked into the grand marble hall, the whispers started.

“Isn't that the waitress who got fired from L’Étoile?”

“A nobody from the south side. She probably trapped him with some cheap trick.”

Mabel felt the heat rush to her cheeks, her self-doubt clawing at her throat. She looked up at Alessandro, who stood beside her like an immovable monolith of dark granite. He sensed her discomfort instantly, wrapping a warm, possessive arm around her waist.

“Ignore them,” Alessandro murmured, his breath brushing her ear. “They are gnats buzzing around a lion.”

Before Mabel could answer, a familiar, sharp voice cut through the polite murmurs of the crowd.

“Well, well. If it isn't the charity case.”

Clarissa Vance stepped out from a circle of socialites, wearing a shimmering silver gown, her expression twisted into a mask of pure malice. Beside her stood her father, Senator Vance, and several senior board members of the city’s financial district.

Clarissa looked Mabel up and down with exaggerated disgust. “I heard you lost your apron, waitress, but it seems you found a much more lucrative way to earn your keep. How much does the great Alessandro Moretti pay to keep a beggar warm in his bed?”

The surrounding guests gasped, freezing in place. Several people stepped back, terrified of provoking Alessandro’s legendary temper.

Mabel’s breath caught. She opened her mouth to speak, ready to shrink back into herself.

Before a single word could leave her lips, Alessandro moved.

The air in the grand hall dropped twenty degrees. The casual elegance of the mafia king vanished, replaced by an apex predator ready to tear the room apart.

Alessandro stepped forward, positioning himself directly in front of Mabel like a shield of iron. He looked down at Clarissa with eyes so cold, so devoid of human mercy, that the young heiress involuntarily stepped backward.

“You spoke out of turn,” Alessandro’s voice was a low, terrifying growl that carried across the entire silent hall.

Senator Vance stepped in, puffing out his chest with political arrogance. “Now see here, Moretti! My daughter was merely expressing—toxins of the city—you can't bring trash into an institution like this and expect us to—AAAGH!”

In a flash of motion too fast to track, Alessandro’s hand shot out, grabbing Senator Vance by his silk lapel and lifting him half an inch off the marble floor.

“Your daughter,” Alessandro whispered, every word dripping with lethal venom, “insulted my future wife. And you just insulted my home.”

The room went dead silent. Senator Vance turned the color of skim milk, his hands trembling as he grabbed Alessandro’s wrists, unable to break the iron grip.

“Apologize,” Alessandro commanded softly.

Clarissa burst into tears of sheer humiliation, her voice cracking. “I’m... I’m sorry! Please, Mr. Moretti, let him go!”

Alessandro stared at them for another agonizing second before tossing Senator Vance back onto his heels with a contemptuous shove. The senator stumbled into a display stand, clutching his lapel, gasping for air.

“If any of you ever look at her, speak to her, or mention her past again,” Alessandro announced to the frozen crowd, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, “I will strip your accounts, dismantle your businesses, and drive every last one of you out of Chicago before sunrise. Am I understood?”

Not a single person breathed.

Alessandro turned, offered his arm to Mabel, and escorted her out of the gala without looking back once.
