Chapter 4 - THE STRATEGY ROOMThe grand study on the second floor of the Vale mansion was illuminated only by the soft, warm light of a single desk lamp and the rain slicking against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the dark estate grounds.

On the massive mahogany desk lay a sprawling map of downtown Chicago, surrounded by financial ledgers, encrypted blueprints of the Grand Continental Hotel, and three secure satellite laptops.

Dominic stood near the window, holding a crystal glass of whiskey he hadn't touched. His mind was executing a hundred tactical scenarios, calculating guard numbers, entry points, and exit routes.

Behind the desk sat Evelyn.

She had finally stripped off the ruined silk dress, changing into a sharp, fitted black trousers suit she had pulled from her wardrobe. Her wet hair had been dried and pulled back into a tight, professional ponytail. Her hands moved across the keyboard of the master laptop with blinding, practiced speed.

“Arthur’s security team at the Continental consists of fourteen armed guards,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the quiet room. “Eight on the penthouse floor, four in the private lobby elevator, and two stationed on the roof near the helipad.”

Dominic walked over to the desk, leaning over her shoulder to look at the screen. The scent of sweet jasmine and subtle soap rose from her hair, a stark contrast to the violence they were planning.

“The Continental’s security system uses an outdated digital firewall,” Evelyn continued, pointing a manicured finger at a line of blue code scrolling across the display. “I can bypass their surveillance cameras for precisely eleven minutes from this terminal. During those eleven minutes, every camera on the forty-fifth floor will loop a pre-recorded forty-second feed of an empty hallway.”

Dominic looked down at her with a mixture of intense focus and growing awe.

“You did this in three minutes?” he asked.

“I spent two years watching my father manage his network, Dominic,” Evelyn said, looking up to meet his gaze. “He thought I was just his obedient daughter, sitting in the corner reading medical journals while he discussed operations with his captains. He didn't realize I was analyzing his server architecture and filing away his access codes in my memory.”

Dominic set his glass down on the desk. He reached out, his hand gently cupping the side of her neck. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, his touch surprisingly soft for a man who had spent his life surrounded by iron and gunpowder.

Evelyn caught her breath slightly, her dark eyes softening as she looked up into his face.

“Why are you helping me do this, Evelyn?” Dominic asked quietly. “He is your father. No matter how cruel he has been... he is the man who raised you.”

Evelyn closed her eyes for a brief second, leaning slightly into the warmth of his palm before pulling back with a quiet, unyielding dignity.

“Arthur Hart stopped being my father the day he tried to force me to alter an autopsy report for one of his corrupt allies,” Evelyn whispered. “When I refused, he let his lawyers destroy my career. He let the press drag my name through the mud until I couldn't walk into a hospital without people whispering that I was a murderer.”

She looked back at the laptop screen, her jaw setting in a hard, uncompromising line.

“And today... he tried to kill an innocent seven-month-old baby to win a war over trucking routes,” she said, her voice trembling with righteous fury. “He doesn't get to ruin any more lives, Dominic. Not Noah’s. Not yours. And not mine.”

Dominic stared at her, the last lingering doubts in his chest dissolving into nothingness. He leaned down, pressing a firm, solemn kiss to her forehead.

“When this night is over,” Dominic said, his voice thick with a promise that carried the full weight of the Vale name, “I will clear your name. I will buy the hospital that turned its back on you. I will give you whatever life you want, Evelyn. You will never be a pawn in anyone’s game again.”

Evelyn looked at him, a genuine, radiant smile touching her lips for the first time since she had walked into his house two months ago.

“Let’s finish the job first, Don Dominic,” she murmured, her fingers hitting the final execution key on the keyboard.

A red light flashed on the screen: OVERRIDE ACTIVE – 11:00 MINUTES REMAINING.

Dominic pulled his heavy leather shoulder holster over his arms, sliding two full magazines into the leather pouches at his side. He racked the slide of his Sig Sauer with a sharp, metallic CLACK.

“Frank!” Dominic called out toward the hallway.

Frank stepped into the study, flanked by eight of the Vale family’s most trusted, battle-hardened operatives, all dressed in unmarked tactical gear.

“The perimeter team is ready, boss,” Frank reported. “Three SUVs are idling in the underground garage. Comms are scrambled.”

Dominic turned to Evelyn, reaching out to take her hand. “You stay here. The house is locked down, and four guards are stationed outside Noah’s room.”

“No,” Evelyn said, standing up from behind the desk and pulling a compact 9mm pistol from her jacket pocket—a weapon Dominic had given her earlier.

Dominic frowned. “Evelyn, it’s going to be bloody.”

“I’m a trauma surgeon, Dominic,” Evelyn replied, a sharp, dangerous glint in her eyes as she checked the magazine of her pistol. “I’ve seen more blood than half the men standing in this room. And besides... if Arthur tries to destroy his digital servers before you reach the penthouse, you’re going to need someone who knows which hard drives contain his offshore accounts.”

Dominic looked at her for three seconds, assessing her strength, her resolve, and her absolute refusal to hide in the shadows.

A slow, proud smile broke across his face.

“Lock and load, sweetheart,” Dominic said, turning toward the door. “Tonight, we take back the city.”
