Chapter 6 - A Slice of Forever

One year later.

The summer sun beat down brightly over the rolling lawns of the Lake Roland estate. The pine trees rustled in a gentle, warm breeze off the sparkling lake, and the air was filled with the scent of blooming white jasmine, sweet lavender, and fresh pastry.

White silk ribbons fluttered from every marble pillar along the grand terrace. Two hundred guests—not politicians or mafia bosses, but real friends, community leaders, teachers from St. Jude Academy, and the loyal estate staff—sat in gilded white chairs on the lawn.

At the front of the altar stood Vincent Moretti.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in a dark navy tailored tuxedo, a white silk rose pinned to his lapel. Beside him stood Marco, wearing a sharp suit and a rare, broad smile.

The harpist began to play a soft, beautiful melody.

Down the white runner carpet walked ten-year-old Lily Porter.

She looked like a little princess in a soft yellow dress, carrying a basket of white rose petals, which she dropped with great, dramatic concentration onto the aisle. On her small wrist sat a shiny gold watch—not with a snake, but with a tiny, painted flower that Vincent had custom-made for her tenth birthday.

Then the crowd stood up.

Grace walked out onto the sunlit terrace.

She was stunning. Her dress was a masterpiece of simple, timeless elegance—pure ivory lace that flowed gracefully over her silhouette, trailing gently behind her on the grass. Her dark hair was swept up with pearl pins, and her face glowed with a pure, unadulterated happiness that moved several guests to tears.

She didn't need a wealthy father to walk her down the aisle. She walked down the runner with her head held high, her eyes locked entirely on Vincent.

When she reached the altar, Vincent took her hand into his, his fingers trembling slightly with overwhelming emotion.

"You look breathtaking," Vincent whispered, his dark eyes shining with tears he didn't care to hide.

"You look pretty good yourself, Mr. Moretti," Grace whispered back, her smile radiant.

The local judge, a gentle old man who had spent thirty years serving the community, stepped forward with a smile.

"We are gathered here today," the judge began, his voice echoing warmly over the lake, "not to join two empires, but to celebrate a love born from courage, truth, and profound loyalty."

The vows were simple, spoken from the depths of two hearts that had survived the darkest storms to find their home in each other.

"With this ring," Vincent said, sliding a brilliant, flawless diamond band onto Grace’s finger, "I give you my home, my honor, my protection, and my entire heart, for as long as I live."

"With this ring," Grace whispered, sliding a matching platinum band onto his finger, "I give you my trust, my devotion, my home, and my endless love, forever."

"By the authority vested in me," the judge smiled broadly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Vincent, you may kiss your bride!"

Vincent pulled Grace into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, triumphant kiss. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, cheer, and celebration, while Lily threw a handful of white rose petals high into the air above them.

Later that afternoon, the wedding reception on the grand lawn reached its crowning moment.

In the center of the wooden dance floor stood a brand-new, magnificent wedding cake.

It was five tiers tall, covered in pristine white buttercream, decorated with delicate handmade sugar strawberries, and smelling intensely of sweet vanilla and fresh cream.

The master baker—a famous, kindly old Italian man whom Vincent had hired personally—stood beside the table with a proud smile.

Vincent and Grace stood behind the cake, holding a silver cake knife together.

The crowd gathered around, clapping and laughing, waiting for the traditional first cut.

Vincent looked down at Lily, who was standing right beside the table, watching the cake with her sharp, bright eyes.

"Lily," Vincent called out softly over the laughter of the guests.

Lily looked up. "Yes, Dad?"

The word Dad made Vincent’s chest expand with a warmth so powerful it nearly brought him to his knees. He had officially adopted Lily three months ago, giving her his name and his heart forever.

Vincent handed the silver knife to Lily, placing his hand over hers, while Grace placed her hand over theirs.

"I think," Vincent said with a warm, deep laugh, "that the bravest girl in New Jersey should cut the very first slice."

Lily beamed, her eyes sparkling with joy. Together, the three of them guided the knife through the top tier of the soft, sweet cake, carving out a perfect, beautiful slice.

Vincent took a small silver fork, took a small piece of the cake, and held it out to Lily.

"Safe?" Vincent asked with a subtle, playful wink.

Lily took the bite, chewed happily, and let out a delighted sigh.

"It's perfect," Lily declared loudly to the whole crowd. "It's the sweetest cake in the world!"

The guests cheered and clinked their champagne glasses as Vincent pulled Grace close against his side, kissing her softly on the temple while Lily hugged both of their waists.

The sun began to set over Lake Roland, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and violet. The music played softly into the warm summer evening, carrying laughter and love across the calm, sparkling waters—a home built not on fear or shadows, but on the sweet, unyielding strength of a family that would last forever.
