Chapter 1 - The Smile of a MonsterThe heavy mahogany doors of the grand foyer rattled beneath the synchronized, authoritative weight of federal boots. Shouts echoed off the vaulted ceilings, a sharp, metallic chorus that instantly stripped the opulent mansion of its suffocating illusion of safety.

“Federal Financial Crimes Division! Search warrant! Nobody move!”
The words hung in the air like ice.
Brandon, who moments before had been lunging forward with blind, domestic rage, froze mid-stride. His face, bruised and smeared with blood from where his forehead had met the mirror, went completely slack. The arrogance that had fueled five years of psychological and physical torment evaporated, replaced by a vacant, shivering terror.
Eleanor staggered backward, her manicured hand flying to her throat, her diamond necklace clicking against her trembling fingers. “This... this is a mistake! Do you know who we are? My husband is Richard Vance! We contribute millions to—!”
She didn't finish. Special Agents in dark tactical vests swarmed the hallway, moving with cold, mechanical precision. They didn’t look at Eleanor’s diamonds. They didn't care about the family name embroidered on the custom wallpaper.
All eyes in the room slowly shifted toward Richard Vance.
Richard hadn't moved an inch. He still stood by the velvet-draped entryway, his crystal tumbler of expensive scotch half-raised toward his lips. But it was his expression—or lack thereof—that sent a chilling shiver down my spine.
He was smiling.
It wasn't a smile of panic, nor was it the desperate grin of a cornered animal. It was a calm, knowing, almost triumphant curve of the lips. The kind of smile a chess grandmaster gives right before trapping an opponent in a checkmate they didn't see coming.
Why isn't he scared? the thought hammered inside my head. He’s laundering millions through dummy corporations. The feds have enough evidence to lock him away for the rest of his natural life. Why is he smiling?
A senior agent, badge gleaming on his belt, stepped forward, his eyes darting between Brandon, Eleanor, and Richard. “Richard Vance?”
“That would be me,” Richard replied, his voice unnervingly smooth, devoid of any tremor. He carefully set his crystal glass down on a side table with a faint clink. “I assume you have a warrant signed by a federal judge? Not that it matters. You boys are barking up a very expensive tree.”
“Step away from the table, sir,” the agent commanded, motioning for two officers to secure him.
As they moved in to zip-tie Richard’s wrists, he didn't resist. Instead, his dark, calculating eyes slid past the agents, locking directly onto mine. There was a sickening warmth in his gaze—a silent acknowledgment that sent warning bells screaming through my nervous system.

He didn't care that the feds were here.
In fact, looking at the smug light dancing in his eyes, I realized something horrifying: Richard Vance wanted them here.
