Chapter 2 - A Crown of Silk and Steel

The Maybach glided through the snow-choked streets of Chicago like a silent ghost. Inside, the temperature was a perfect seventy-two degrees, smelling of fresh leather, warm tea, and Leo’s intoxicating cologne.

Mia lay curled against Leo’s chest, her body trembling from the sudden adrenaline crash. Her mind was a chaotic blur of light and sound—the humiliation of aisle 3, Greg’s pathetic whimpering, the five-million-dollar check, and now, the solid, unyielding heat of the most feared man in the Midwest holding her as if she were made of fragile glass.

"Drink this," Leo said softly.

He held a crystal glass filled with warm, honeyed chamomile tea to her lips. Mia took a slow sip, the warmth spreading through her chilled chest.

"Leo..." she choked out, looking up at his sharp profile illuminated by the amber ambient light of the car. "What... what just happened? Why did you buy that store?"

Leo adjusted the soft cashmere blanket he had wrapped around her shoulders, his long fingers gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

"Because he touched what was mine," Leo said simply. His voice contained no heat, only absolute conviction. "And because you will never set foot in a place that causes you pain ever again."

"I am not yours," Mia whispered, though there was no anger in her voice—only confusion and overwhelming exhaustion. "I’m just... a cashier. I’m a broke, single mother whose own boyfriend left her the second he saw a double line on a stick. You don't even know me."

Leo’s dark eyes locked onto hers. The sheer intensity of his gaze was breathtaking.

"I know that you wake up at five in the morning every day," Leo said quietly. "I know that you live in a third-floor walk-up on Damen Avenue where the radiator clanks all night. I know that you buy cheap vitamins because you spend your remaining money on rent. I know that despite every cruel hand this world has dealt you, you still smile at elderly ladies when you scan their groceries."

Mia stared at him, her heart thumping against her ribs. "You... you were watching me?"

"I have watched you for four months," Leo admitted smoothly, without a shred of guilt. "From the moment you stood in that store with your head held high while the world tried to crush you. I am a man who lives in darkness, Mia. I deal in violence, power, and cold transactions. But every Tuesday and Friday at four p.m., I walked into that miserable grocery store just to watch the light inside you."

He reached down, placing his large, warm palm gently over the swell of her stomach.

Mia held her breath, waiting for him to pull back, but he didn't. His hand was heavy, protective, and amazingly warm. Beneath his palm, the baby gave a sudden, firm kick.

Leo froze.

For the first time since she had met him, the terrifying Mafia Don looked completely stunned. His eyes widened slightly, staring down at her stomach where his hand rested. A subtle, rare smile softened the harsh line of his lips.

"He is strong," Leo murmured.

"She," Mia corrected gently, a faint tear slipping down her cheek. "Dr. Miller said it's a girl."

Leo’s dark eyes softened completely. "Then she will be a princess. And no one will ever make her—or her mother—cry again."

Ten minutes later, the Maybach pulled into the private underground garage of a soaring residential tower on the Gold Coast. A private elevator took them directly to the top floor, opening into a sprawling, multi-level penthouse overlooking the dark, expanse of Lake Michigan.

A team of medical professionals was already waiting in the living room.

Dr. Aris Miller—Mia’s own physician, whom Leo had personally summoned—stepped forward with a gentle, reassuring smile, accompanied by two female nurses carrying modern portable ultrasound equipment.

"Mia," Dr. Miller said warmly. "Mr. Castiglione called me. Let’s get you checked out right away."

For the next hour, Mia was cared for with a level of luxury she didn't know existed. She was laid on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in heated blankets, while Dr. Miller performed a thorough check-up.

"The baby is perfectly fine, Mia," Dr. Miller announced, pointing to the crisp monitor screen showing the steady, rhythmic fluttering of a little heart. "The cramps were severe Braxton Hicks brought on by physical exhaustion, dehydration, and extreme stress. You need total bed rest, high-protein meals, and absolute quiet."

"She will have all of it," Leo said from his position by the floor-to-ceiling glass window. He was sipping a glass of bourbon, watching the snow coat the city below.

After the medical team left with generous envelopes of cash, the silence returned to the penthouse. Mia sat on the sofa, wearing a pair of silk pajamas that one of Leo’s female assistants had provided.

She looked around the vast, elegant room. "Leo... I can't stay here. This is too much. I can't afford to pay you back for any of this."

Leo walked over, setting his glass on the marble coffee table. He sat down beside her, his presence filling the space completely.

"You will never pay me back for anything," Leo said. "This penthouse is yours. The staff is yours. My doctors, my cars, my security—they are all yours."

Before Mia could respond, the elevator bell chimed sharply.

Paulie stepped out into the foyer, his face grim. He held a tablet in his hand and gestured subtly to Leo.

"Boss," Paulie said softly. "We have a situation down at the Damen Avenue apartment."

Leo stood up, his posture instantly shifting back into that of the ruthless crime boss. "Speak."

"It’s her ex," Paulie said, glancing briefly at Mia. "Tommy. He heard rumors from the neighborhood that Mia was seen leaving with your motorcade. The idiot thought he could break into her apartment to steal her emergency cash before she came back. My men caught him breaking the door lock five minutes ago."

Mia gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Tommy..."

Leo turned his gaze toward her, his dark eyes turning dangerously cold. "Did he leave anything of value in that apartment, Mia?"

"N-no," Mia stammered. "Just... my mother’s old silver locket. It was in the bedroom drawer."

May you like

Leo nodded once. He turned back to Paulie.

"Retrieve the locket," Leo commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "And bring Mr. Tommy to the basement facility in West Cicero. Tell him I will be down to speak with him personally in one hour."
