Chapter 5 - The Battered NotebookTwo large security officers stepped forward, moving toward the table.

April stood up so violently her chair crashed backward onto the marble floor. "If he leaves, I leave with him!"

June’s face turned bright red. "April, stop embarrassing yourself! He's a liar and a beggar!"

"He is more of a gentleman than anyone in this room!" April shouted, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "I don't care where he sleeps! I don't care how much money he has! He has more heart, honesty, and integrity than you could ever dream of having, June!"

Frank Bennett stood up, his face pale with shock and sorrow. "June! That is enough! You have crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed!"

Peter gently placed his hand on April's shoulder. His face was entirely calm. There was no anger in his expression—only an overwhelming, profound dignity.

"It's all right, April," Peter said softly.

He unbuttoned his navy jacket and reached inside his interior pocket.

Several guests gasped, pulling back as if expecting a weapon.

What Peter removed was his battered black notebook, held together by gray tape. He placed it gently on the white tablecloth in front of him. Then, from between its yellowed pages, he pulled out a folded legal document stamped with a red corporate seal and a notarized gold emblem.

He unfolded the document slowly and laid it flat beside the notebook.

At the head of the main table, a silver-haired man in a bespoke tuxedo suddenly froze. It was Arthur Vance, the CEO of Vance Global Publishing and one of the most powerful media moguls in the country, who had attended the wedding as a close friend of Daniel’s father.

Arthur Vance stood up so quickly he knocked over his water glass. He walked down the length of the table, his eyes fixed on the signature at the bottom of the document.

"My God," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling. "Julian... Julian Vance?"

Peter looked up at the older man, giving a sad, faint nod. "Hello, Uncle Arthur."

The room erupted into frantic murmurs.

"Julian Vance?" a venture capitalist at the next table gasped. "The founder of Vance Quantum Technologies? The man who created the neural-encryption algorithm?"

Arthur Vance turned to face the stunned crowd, his eyes filled with tears. "Three years ago, my nephew Julian Vance was betrayed by his executive board. They stole his patents, framed him for fraud, and erased his name from the company he built. Julian refused to fight them in court because he didn't want to destroy the pensions of the ten thousand employees working for him. He walked away with nothing!"

Arthur turned back to Peter, grabbing his shoulders. "We proved your innocence eighteen months ago, Julian! The board members were indicted! The federal courts restored ninety percent of your equity! We've had a team of investigators searching every major city in America trying to find you!"

June stood frozen, her mouth open, the phone slipping from her fingers onto the floor.

Arthur pointed to the battered black notebook on the table. "Do you have any idea what is inside that book? That is the original hand-written architecture for the global quantum network! That notebook alone is worth over two hundred million dollars!"

A heavy, absolute silence descended upon the ballroom.

Peter—Julian—looked at June, his amber eyes clear and steady.

"I didn't keep this book because of its value, June," Julian said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "I kept it to remind myself that even when you lose everything—your money, your status, your home—your mind, your character, and your honor belong entirely to you. No one can steal those from you unless you give them away."

He turned to April, his expression softening into warmth. "April didn't know who I was. She didn't ask for my resume. She saw a man freezing in the rain, sat down beside him on a plastic crate, and offered him warmth and respect when no one else would."

Julian took April's hand, raising it gently to his lips. "She gave me back my belief in humanity."
