Chapter 3 - The ReconstructionThe morning sun rose over Chicago like a cold blade, cutting through the autumn mist along Lake Michigan.

The media circus had already begun outside the front gates. Reporters from every major news network shouted questions as police vans transported Vanessa and her brother downtown. Headlines flashed across cable news: Hotel Tycoon’s Wife Arrested in Shocking Elder Abuse and Embezzlement Scheme.
Inside the estate, the oppressive silence that had choked the halls for months was finally gone.
I spent the morning in the kitchen with Maria, our longtime head cook, preparing soft toast and black tea for my mother.
“Mr. Daniel,” Maria said softly, wiping her hands on a cloth apron. “I blame myself, too. I should have spoken up. I saw the bruises, but Mrs. Mercer threatened to fire my entire family if I uttered a single word.”
“You have nothing to apologize for, Maria,” I said, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Nobody knew the extent of her cruelty except Vanessa herself. From now on, this house operates differently. No locked doors. No restricted wings. My mother goes wherever she pleases, whenever she pleases.”
When I brought the tray upstairs, Margaret was already awake, watching the twins play with a rattle on the rug.
“You don’t have to wait on me like an invalid, Daniel,” she smiled faintly, though her eyes betrayed her fatigue.
“I’m not waiting on an invalid,” I replied, pulling up a chair beside her bed. “I’m taking care of my mother. Something I should have been doing a lot more of.”
My phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was Benjamin Ross, my chief corporate attorney.
“Daniel,” Benjamin said without preamble. “The emergency audit of Blue Hollow Hospitality is complete. Aside from the capital Vanessa funneled to her brother—which we are already freezing through the courts—the core business is completely secure. But there’s something else you need to know regarding Vanessa’s background.”
“What is it?”
“We ran a deep background check on her prior to her marriage to you. It turns out her family wasn't wealthy like she claimed. They were facing foreclosure three years ago when she suddenly came into a large sum of money. The source of that initial capital traces back to a man named Arthur Vance—a notorious corporate raider who was blacklisted from Chicago real estate a decade ago.”
My eyes narrowed. “Arthur Vance? The same man whose firm we acquired out of bankruptcy two years ago?”
“The exact same man,” Benjamin confirmed. “Vanessa wasn't just marrying you for money, Daniel. It was a calculated corporate plant. She was placed in your path to infiltrate Blue Hollow from the inside and lay the groundwork for a hostile takeover.”

The pieces clicked together with terrifying precision. The late-night phone calls, the feigned innocence, the cold manipulation—it wasn't just marital betrayal; it was corporate warfare using my own family as leverage.
“Revoke every single stock option, trust allocation, and marital asset claim she has,” I instructed coldly. “Leave her with nothing. Let Arthur Vance support her from a prison cell.”
