Chapter 5 - The Grand Reckoning

The annual Chicago Commercial Real Estate Gala was held at the Grand Hyatt Ballroom downtown.

It was the most prestigious event of the year, attended by the Mayor, city council members, federal inspectors, and the media. Walter Ashford was scheduled to receive the prestigious Citizen of the Year Award for the construction of Ashford Tower.

Walter stood near the podium in a custom tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch, surrounded by reporters and groveling developers.

"Ashford Tower represents the resilience and strength of Chicago," Walter declared to a television camera, his voice booming with fake sincerity. "We build with integrity, and we build to last."

At that exact moment, the double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The chatter in the room instantly died.

Walking down the red carpet was Ethan Ashford, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. Beside him walked Clara Bennett.

She wore a breathtaking, simple navy silk evening gown that hugged her graceful form, her dark hair styled in an elegant chignon. She walked with complete confidence, her gait smooth and effortless, carrying a thick black leather portfolio.

Behind them walked three uniformed agents from the Federal Building and Housing Authority and two senior investigators from the State Attorney General's Office.

Walter’s scotch glass trembled in his hand. "Ethan? What is the meaning of this?"

Ethan stepped up to the main stage, taking a microphone from the podium before the organizers could stop him.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Ethan’s voice echoed across the massive hall. "Before my father receives an award for 'integrity,' there are documents the city needs to see."

A murmur swept through the crowd. Camera crews immediately turned their lenses toward the stage.

Clara stepped up beside Ethan, opening the portfolio.

"Three years ago," Clara stated clearly into the microphone, her voice carrying the commanding authority of a woman who feared nothing, "the Ashford Group falsified safety certification records for the structural foundation of Ashford Tower. Over twenty million dollars allocated for certified structural steel was funneled into offshore accounts owned by Walter Ashford."

She pulled out glowing, high-resolution copies of the original steel delivery receipts, signed by Walter himself, alongside internal audit memos threatening whistleblowers with termination.

"These documents have just been submitted to the State Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Clara added smoothly.

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters rushed forward, flashing lights blinding the stage.

Walter’s face turned from red to a terrifying, pale purple. "You... you lies! This is a bitter lie from a disgruntled former employee!"

The lead Federal Agent stepped onto the stage, pulling a badge from his jacket.

"Walter Ashford," the agent declared loudly over the noise of the crowd. "You are under arrest for federal corporate fraud, endangerment, and illegal bribery of municipal officials. You have the right to remain silent."

Vivian screamed as federal agents stepped forward, placing steel handcuffs around Walter’s wrists.

As Walter was escorted down the stage in front of dozens of national news cameras, he stopped in front of Clara. His eyes were wild, his voice trembling with utter defeat.

"You..." Walter whispered, his voice cracking. "You destroyed everything I built."

Clara looked into the eyes of the man who had tried to humiliate her on a marble floor three weeks ago. Her gaze was calm, steady, and filled with quiet grace.

"You destroyed yourself, Mr. Ashford," Clara said softly. "You built a tower out of lies and assumed no one would ever inspect the foundation."

Walter was marched out of the ballroom in handcuffs, his empire collapsing in front of the entire city.
