Chapter 3 - The Deception of St. Jude’sAt 6:00 AM, the sun rose over Lake Geneva, painting the frosty snow in pale shades of pink and orange.

Daniel sat in his study, staring at a secure digital document sent directly from the chief geneticist at the Chicago lab.
PATERNITY & MATERNITY ANALYSIS RESULT: Subject 1 (Daniel Whitmore) & Subject A (Ivy Whitmore): 99.999% Match. Subject 1 (Daniel Whitmore) & Subject B (Skye Whitmore): 99.999% Match. Maternal Marker Verification against stored medical profile of Claire Whitmore: 99.999% Match.
Daniel stared at the paper. There was no longer any doubt. Ivy and Skye were his biological daughters. Claire had given birth to twins while being kept in forced isolation at St. Jude’s Clinic.
Before Daniel could process the overwhelming mixture of joy and rage, his satellite phone chimed.
“Speak, Gideon,” Daniel said.
“We found Dr. Harrison Vance,” Gideon reported over the encrypted line. “He was attempting to board a private charter flight to Costa Rica out of a small airfield in Rockford. My team intercepted him ten minutes ago. He is currently secured in the basement of our private facility in downtown Chicago.”
“Is he talking?”
“He wasn't at first,” Gideon chuckled darkly. “Then I showed him a photograph of his sister, Helen, lying in a coma at Mercy General, and told him that your mother’s hitman was the one who drove the car. He broke completely. He’s terrified for his life, Mr. Whitmore. He’s ready to sign a full confession in exchange for federal protection.”
“I’m heading to Chicago now,” Daniel said. “Have my legal team draft emergency custody papers, a petition for exhumation and full medical review, and a freeze order on all assets held by the Whitmore Family Trust.”
“Consider it done, sir.”
Daniel walked into the kitchen, where a private chef hired by Gideon’s firm was preparing warm pancakes, fresh fruit, and hot cocoa for the girls.
Ivy and Skye were sitting on tall barstools, their feet dangling inches from the floor. They were dressed in soft, oversized cashmere sweaters Daniel had retrieved from Claire’s old wardrobe. They looked tiny, beautiful, and vibrant.
When Ivy saw Daniel walk in, her face lit up with a brilliant smile. “Look, mister! Pancakes with strawberries!”
Daniel couldn't help the warm smile that broke across his face. He walked over, lifted Ivy off the stool, and spun her around gently before setting her down, doing the same for Skye. Their giggles filled the high-ceilinged kitchen—a sound that this house had waited two long years to hear.
“Girls,” Daniel said, kneeling in front of them. “I have to go into the city for a little while to handle some important business. But my friend Marco and his security team are going to stay right here with you. They’re going to protect you, okay?”
Skye looked worried, her small hands clutching the edge of her sweater. “Are you coming back?”
Daniel reached out, pulled the silver medallion from his pocket, and gently placed it around Skye’s neck. Then he pulled a matching silver watch from his wrist and handed it to Ivy.
“I am keeping these safe with you,” Daniel said, looking into their dark, innocent eyes. “And I promise you, on my life, I will be back before dinner. We are going to build a snowman right out on that lawn.”
Ivy beamed, holding the silver watch to her ear. “It ticks!”
“It does,” Daniel smiled, kissing both of their foreheads. “Eat your pancakes. Daddy will be back soon.”
An hour later, Daniel arrived at a non-descript industrial building on the outskirts of Chicago.
Gideon led him down a flight of concrete stairs into a soundproofed basement room. Sitting at a metal table, looking disheveled, terrified, and covered in cold sweat, was Dr. Harrison Vance.
When the heavy steel door opened and Daniel stepped into the room, Dr. Vance flinched, pulling his hands back as if he expected to be struck.
“Daniel... please...” Dr. Vance gasped, his voice trembling. “You have to believe me! I never wanted to hurt Claire! Margaret forced my hand!”
Daniel pulled out a metal chair, sat down across from the doctor, and rested his hands flat on the table. His expression was utterly terrifying in its calm.
“Talk,” Daniel said quietly. “You have five minutes before I hand you over to the State’s Attorney with enough evidence to send you to prison for the rest of your natural life.”
Dr. Vance swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his forehead with a trembling sleeve.
“It started three years ago,” Dr. Vance began, his words tumbling out in a desperate rush. “Claire came to my clinic for a routine fertility checkup while you were in Tokyo. We ran blood tests... and discovered she was already six weeks pregnant with twins.”
Daniel felt his jaw tighten, but he remained silent.
“I called Margaret to give her the good news, expecting her to be thrilled,” Vance wept softly. “Instead, she came to my office that night with Ethan. They showed me the terms of the Whitmore Family Trust and Claire’s estate. Margaret realized that if those babies were born, Claire’s eighty-million-dollar inheritance would be tied up forever, and Daniel... you would gain absolute control of the entire Whitmore empire as the head of a new bloodline. Ethan would be completely cut out.”
“So what did she offer you?” Daniel asked, his voice dripping with venom.
“Four million dollars,” Vance admitted, lowering his head in shame. “And she threatened to ruin my medical license and destroy my family if I refused. They engineered a fake medical diagnosis. I told Claire she had an aggressive form of uterine cancer and that taking aggressive experimental drugs at St. Jude’s was her only chance to survive.”
“You poisoned my pregnant wife?” Daniel stood up so violently his chair slammed into the wall.
“No! No! I swear to God, no!” Vance screamed, lifting his arms to protect himself. “I couldn't do that! I substituted the chemotherapy drugs with heavy vitamins and mild sedatives! I kept her hidden in the private wing! She carried those babies to term, Daniel! She gave birth to two healthy girls!”
Daniel stopped, his heart slamming against his ribs. “Claire gave birth? She knew she had twins?”
“Yes!” Vance sobbed. “She held them! She named them Ivy and Skye! But Margaret... Margaret told Claire that the babies were stillborn due to her cancer. They took the girls away immediately after birth and handed them to my sister, Helen, ordering Helen to take them to an unregistered orphanage in Canada!”
Daniel’s breathing became ragged. The sheer, unfathomable cruelty of it devastated him. Claire had spent her final weeks believing her newborn children had died, while Margaret and Ethan watched her fade away from broken heart and grief.
“Claire didn't die of cancer,” Daniel realized, his voice breaking. “She died of a broken heart.”
“Yes,” Vance whispered, tears streaming down his face. “She refused to eat. She lost the will to live. After Claire died, Helen couldn't bring herself to abandon the girls. She hid them in an old family cabin in northern Illinois, raising them secretly for three years using money I funneled to her behind Margaret’s back.”
“Until Margaret found out,” Daniel said.
“Last week, Ethan discovered that Helen was still in Illinois,” Vance said. “Margaret ordered Ethan to track Helen down, eliminate the girls, and destroy any connection to Claire. Helen found out Ethan was coming for them, grabbed the girls, took Claire’s silver medallion from my office safe, wrote that note, and ran!”
Daniel turned away from the doctor, leaning his forehead against the cold concrete wall.
The horror of what his wife had endured crushed him. But amid the agony, a white-hot flame of vengeance roared to life within his soul.
Claire had fought until her last breath. Helen had sacrificed her life to protect those girls.
Now, it was his turn.
Daniel turned back to Gideon. “Is everything recorded?”
Gideon pointed to a high-definition camera in the corner of the ceiling. “Every word, broadcast live to a secure server and reviewed by your chief legal counsel.”
“Good,” Daniel said, stepping toward the door. “Gideon, contact the State Police, the FBI, and the Financial Crimes Division. Tell them Daniel Whitmore is filing formal criminal charges for kidnapping, attempted murder, medical fraud, and grand embezzlement against Margaret Whitmore, Ethan Whitmore, and Lauren Whitmore.”

“And what are you going to do, sir?” Gideon asked.
Daniel adjusted his cuffs, his eyes cold as ice. “I’m going to attend my mother’s annual autumn charity gala at the Drake Hotel tonight. It’s time the Whitmore family held its final board meeting.”
