Chapter 4 - The Patriarch’s ShadowThe entire ballroom went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick wool carpet.

Through the double doors walked Arthur Crawford.

At seventy-five years old, my father was a living legend in global commerce. His hair was stark white, combed straight back, and his custom-tailored charcoal suit was immaculate. Despite his age, he walked with the steady, predatory stride of a man who owned empires and crushed competitors without blinking. Flanked by four federal marshals and two senior partners from the Department of Justice, he walked straight down the center aisle, ignoring the gasps and whispers of the shocked elite.

Spencer turned pale as a corpse. He knew who Arthur Crawford was. Every man and woman in high finance knew who Arthur Crawford was.

When my father reached the center of the room, he didn't look at the politicians, the real estate tycoons, or the society socialites. His sharp, piercing eyes scanned the crowd until they locked directly onto me and Hazel.

The stern, hard lines of his weathered face instantly softened into a profound, overwhelming warmth.

Arthur Crawford—the ruthless billionaire titan whom world leaders approached with caution—strode past mayors and corporate CEOs, walked right up to me, and gently cupped my cheek with his weathered hand.

“My sweet girl,” Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. “You’ve been away from home for far too long.”

“I’m sorry it took me so long to call, Daddy,” I whispered, a genuine smile touching my lips as I leaned into his palm for a brief moment.

Arthur then dropped to one knee, bringing himself down to eye level with Hazel. He pulled a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a delicate gold locket set with a tiny diamond.

“And who is this stunning young lady?” Arthur smiled warmly. “Must be my brilliant granddaughter.”

Hazel beamed, her shyness melting away. “I’m Hazel, Mr. Grandfather.”

Arthur laughed heartily, kissing the back of her small hand. “Mr. Grandfather? I like the sound of that. And I promise you, Hazel, nobody will ever make you cry again. Anyone who tries answers to me.”

The guests around us exchanged stunned, terrified glances. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.

“Did he say granddaughter?” “Gwen Crawford? She’s Arthur Crawford’s daughter?!” “Good God... Spencer Albright married an heiress to the Crawford fortune and spent six years treating her like a maid? Is he out of his mind?!”

Spencer looked like he was about to vomit. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to grab onto the edge of a nearby cocktail table to keep from collapsing. The reality of what he had done crashed down on him with the weight of an avalanche. He had held the golden goose in his hands, abused it, starved it, and invited his mistress to strike its child—and now, the bill had finally come due.

Arthur stood up slowly, his warmth evaporating in a fraction of a second as he turned his gaze toward Spencer Albright. The transformation was terrifying. The loving grandfather vanished, replaced by an industrial executioner.

“Spencer Albright,” Arthur said, his voice ringing out across the ballroom like a death knell.

Spencer swallowed hard, his lips trembling. “Ar-Arthur... sir... I didn't know... if I had known that Gwen was—”

“If you had known she was a Crawford, you would have treated her like a queen just to protect your failing little real estate firm,” Arthur interrupted, stepping forward until he stood towering over Spencer. “Instead, you treated her like dirt. You isolated her. You let your vulgar little mistress assault her five-year-old daughter on a marble floor.”

Cassandra shrank back into the crowd, trying to make herself as small as possible, but two federal marshals stepped effortlessly into her path, blocking her escape.

“Mr. Crawford, please,” Spencer stammered, his hands shaking frantically as he reached out in a pathetic plea. “It was a misunderstanding! A domestic dispute! We can settle this in mediation—Albright Enterprises and the Crawford Trust can partner up—!”

“Albright Enterprises no longer exists, Mr. Albright,” Arthur said coldly.

At that exact moment, the massive electronic projection screens lining the walls of the ballroom flickered to life. Instead of the gala’s promotional slides, the screens displayed official federal seizure notices, bankruptcy filings, and explosive financial documents bearing the seal of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“As of 4:00 PM today,” Arthur continued, his voice echoing through the sound system, “every asset, every subsidiary, every holding, and every bank account belonging to Albright Enterprises has been seized by federal authorities under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, backed by capital default notices issued exclusively by the Crawford Sovereign Trust.”

Arthur leaned in close to Spencer’s ear, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper.

“You wanted a war, Spencer. You wanted to prove how powerful you were. Well, your accounts are frozen, your company is liquidated, your mansion is currently being inventoried by federal marshals, and by sunrise, you’ll be sharing a holding cell with white-collar fraudsters who will very much enjoy your company.”

May you like

Spencer collapsed.

His legs finally gave out, and he dropped heavily onto his knees right onto the spilled champagne he had shattered earlier, staring blankly at the floor as his entire life dissolved into absolute ash.
