Chapter 4 - THE QUEEN OF BLACKTHORNESix weeks later.

The snow was falling thick and quiet over the Hudson Valley, blanketing the manicured gardens of Blackthorne House in pure, unblemished white.

In the grand dining room, the atmosphere was completely transformed. The cold, austere silence that had once defined the estate was gone, replaced by the warm light of a massive fireplace, the scent of roasting chicken, and the sound of laughter.

Mara—now dressed in a soft cream cashmere sweater and tailored wool trousers—sat at the head of the table beside Dominic. Her shoulder still ached when the weather turned cold, but the color had returned to her cheeks, and her hazel eyes carried a light they hadn't held in nearly a decade.

Caleb sat between them, happily building a fort out of mashed potatoes and green beans.

“No construction projects at the dinner table, Caleb,” Dominic said gently, though his gray eyes held a fond warmth that his business associates would never have recognized.

“Mara said I could build a castle if I ate three pieces of broccoli,” Caleb argued, turning his big brown eyes to Mara for support.

Mara smiled, reaching over to wipe a spot of gravy from the boy’s chin. “I said after you ate the broccoli, young man.”

Caleb giggled, instantly picking up his fork and stuffing a tree of broccoli into his mouth.

Dominic watched the interaction, his heart feeling fuller than it had since his late wife had passed away five years ago. He set his wine glass down and reached under the table, finding Mara’s hand and holding it tight.

“The grand jury delivered the indictments an hour ago,” Dominic said softly so Caleb wouldn't hear.

Mara looked up, her breath catching. “All of them?”

“All of them,” Dominic confirmed. “Using the encrypted flash drive your father buried in your old home—the one Viktor recovered last week—the federal prosecutors have completely dismantled Julian Vane’s network. Vane will spend the rest of his natural life in a supermax facility in Colorado. He will never see the sun again.”

A deep, trembling breath left Mara’s lungs. It was as if a heavy iron band that had been wrapped around her chest for eight long years had suddenly snapped open.

“I’m finally free,” she whispered.

“You’ve been free since the day you bled on my floor, Evelyn,” Dominic said softly. He shifted in his chair, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.

Mara froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs—not with fear, but with a wild, breathtaking hope.

Dominic opened the box. Inside lay a delicate platinum ring set with a single, flawless emerald that matched the exact green of her eyes.

“When you took those bullets for Caleb,” Dominic said, his voice deep and gravelly with emotion, “you gave me back my world. But over the last three months, watching you heal, listening to you laugh, seeing the way you love my son... you gave me back my heart.”

He looked straight into her eyes—no longer the terrifying syndicate boss, but a man who was deeply, irrevocably in love.

“I don't want you to be a shadow in this house anymore, Mara. I don't want you to be my maid. I want you to be my wife. The mistress of Blackthorne. Caleb’s mother.”

Caleb stopped eating, his big eyes darting between his father and Mara. “Does that mean Mara stays forever?” he asked in a small, hopeful voice.

Dominic smiled gently, his eyes never leaving Mara’s face. “That depends on her, buddy.”

Tears gathered in Mara’s eyes, bright and clear as diamonds. She looked at the little boy who had given her a reason to live, and then at the powerful, fierce man who had built a fortress around her soul.

“Yes,” she choked out, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face. “Yes, Dominic. Forever.”

Caleb let out a cheer, jumping off his chair and throwing his arms around Mara’s neck, while Dominic leaned across the table, pulling her into a kiss that tasted of sweet wine, firelight, and the promise of a future without fear.
