Chapter 5 - The Snake in the PenthouseThe purge of Lucian Vance's syndicate took three days.

With the evidence recovered from Brendan's phone and Dr. Sterling's confession—who had been apprehended by Miles at JFK airport attempting to board a flight to Zurich—federal agencies launched a sweep across Queens. Vance's empire crumbled overnight under charges of racketeering, attempted murder, and corporate extortion.

The threat that had hung over New York for a decade was erased.

By Sunday evening, peace had finally returned to the penthouse in Hudson Yards.

The broken glass had been replaced, the power fully restored, and the heavy air of paranoia replaced by the soft warmth of late-summer sunshine streaming through the windows.

In the center of the living room, Titan was doing something he hadn't done in seven months.

He was trotting.

His silver coat glistened in the sunlight, his tail wagging in slow, heavy sweeps as he chased a red rubber ball I kept tossing across the marble floor. He had gained twelve pounds back. His legs were strong, his eyes clear and full of life.

I sat on the sofa, wearing a comfortable white sweater and jeans, watching him with a quiet smile.

"He's fast when he wants to be," a voice said from behind me.

I turned. Jared was standing near the doorway, holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling apple cider. He wore a simple charcoal sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed, handsome, and remarkably peaceful.

He walked over, handed me a glass, and sat down beside me on the plush cushions.

Titan trotted over, dropped the red ball directly into Jared's lap, and let out a loud, demanding huff.

Jared laughed—a deep, rich sound I had never heard before—and tossed the ball back across the rug.

"He's completely recovered, Willa," Jared said, leaning back against the sofa, his arm resting comfortably behind my head along the back cushion. "The vet panel came by this morning while you were resting. They signed off on his bloodwork. Zero trace of toxins. Full physical recovery."

I took a slow sip of my drink, feeling a sweet, bittersweet ache in my chest.

"That's wonderful news," I said softly, looking down at my glass. "Which means... my job here is done."

Jared went still. He turned his head, looking at me with a steady, intense gaze. "Is it?"

"I signed a contract to save Titan," I reminded him quietly. "You paid me. You protected me from Brendan. You gave me my life back, Jared. Now you don't need a specialist living in your penthouse anymore."

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the sleek black keycard to the penthouse elevator, and laid it gently on the coffee table.

"I found a small cottage up in Vermont," I continued, fighting the lump forming in my throat. "It has a big backyard, near an animal shelter that offered me a full-time position as a rehab technician. I'm leaving tomorrow morning."

Silence settled over the room.

Titan stopped playing with his ball, walking over to rest his chin on my knees, looking up at me as if he understood every word.

Jared didn't yell. He didn't reach for the keycard. He simply sat there, watching me with those stormy gray eyes that had once terrified me, but now felt like the safest place in the world.

Slowly, Jared reached into his sweater pocket.

He pulled out a small, heavy silver key attached to a leather keychain, along with a thick blue folder. He set them on the table right beside the keycard.

"What's that?" I asked.

"The deed to forty acres of land in Woodstock, Vermont," Jared answered smoothly. "And the architectural blueprints for the Thornton Animal Sanctuary."

I blinked, staring at him in complete shock. "What?"

"I bought the land three days ago," Jared explained, his voice low and incredibly tender. "It has a fully equipped veterinary clinic, stables for rescued horses, kennels for abused working dogs, and a private house near the lake."

My breath hitched. "Jared... why would you do that?"

Jared turned toward me, taking my hand in his, his large, warm fingers wrapping around mine.

"Because you belong with animals, Willa," Jared murmured softly. "You have a gift that shouldn't be hidden in a basement clinic in Brooklyn or locked away in a high-rise in Manhattan. You deserve a place where you can heal the world on your own terms."

Tears welled in my eyes, blurring the sight of his handsome face. "Jared..."

"The deed is entirely in your name," Jared added, squeezing my hand gently. "No strings. No contracts. You can leave tomorrow. You can go to Vermont, open your sanctuary, and never see me again if that's what you want."

I looked down at our joined hands, then up into his eyes. "And what do you want, Jared?"

Jared leaned closer, his forehead resting gently against mine. His breath felt warm against my lips.

"I want to be invited," Jared whispered, his voice laced with raw vulnerability. "I want to drive up there on Friday nights. I want to watch you run across those green fields with Titan. I want to build a life where I'm not just a man holding a gun in the dark, but a man who learns how to love again from the woman who saved my soul."

A tear slipped down my cheek. I smiled through the tears, lifting my hand to touch the side of his jaw.

"You don't have to wait until Friday," I whispered back.

May you like

Jared's eyes flared with a dark, breathtaking joy. He closed the tiny distance between us, pressing his lips against mine in a kiss that was deep, passionate, and filled with a lifetime of unspoken promises.

Titan let out a happy bark, resting his heavy head across both of our laps.
