Chapter 5 - The Siege of ChicagoFor fourteen hours, the Moretti estate was a tomb of silence.

I stayed in the study with Emma, unable to eat, unable to sit still. Every tick of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a countdown to doom. Marco, his arm in a sling, stayed outside the door with four guards, monitoring the encrypted radio frequencies coming out of Illinois.

At nine at night, the news broke on the national networks.

“A massive explosion has destroyed a private estate in the suburbs of Chicago owned by prominent logistics mogul Donato Cavalli...” the news anchor reported. “Local authorities report heavy gunfire across the industrial port district... Federal law enforcement is responding to what appears to be a massive, coordinated underworld purge...”

My heart leapt into my throat. I stared at the television screen, where helicopter footage showed flashing red lights surrounding a burning mansion in Chicago.

"Sophia," Marco said, stepping into the room with a satellite phone in his good hand. "It's the Don."

I practically tore the phone from his grip. "Damiano!"

"It's over, my love," Damiano's voice came through the speaker, heavy, tired, but completely triumphant.

I let out a ragged sob, pressing my hand over my mouth. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

"I have a few scratches, nothing more," Damiano reassured me softly. "Don Cavalli and his inner council fought to the end. They are gone. Victoria Cavalli has been handed over to federal authorities along with twenty years of shipping ledgers that will put her away in a maximum-security prison for the rest of her natural life. Chicago has surrendered."

"Damiano..." I wept, tears of pure relief flooding my eyes.

"The war is finished, Sophia," he said, his tone turning warm and intimate. "The Commission has named me the undisputed Capo of the East Coast and the Midwest. There is no one left to challenge us. No one left to threaten my family."

"When are you coming home?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"My plane lands in New York in two hours," Damiano replied. "Have your best dress ready, Sophia. Because tomorrow morning, the entire city is going to watch us get married."

True to his word, Damiano arrived at the estate at midnight.

He looked exhausted, his clothing stained with dust and smoke, but the moment he stepped through the front door and saw me waiting at the top of the stairs, a look of pure, unadulterated joy washed over his face.

I didn't care about the mud or the soot. I ran down the stairs and threw myself into his arms. He lifted me completely off my feet, spinning me around in the grand foyer as our lips locked in a passionate, desperate kiss that erased every lingering fear in my soul.

"I missed you," I whispered against his mouth.

"I will never leave you again," Damiano promised, setting me down gently.

He looked past me to where Emma was peeking out from behind a marble pillar, holding Barnaby. Damiano reached into his pocket and pulled out the crayon drawing—completely undamaged—along with a small, velvet jewelry box.

He walked over to Emma and knelt down. "I brought your drawing back, just like I promised."

"And what's in the box?" Emma asked, pointing her small finger at the velvet square.

Damiano opened the box. Inside sat a breathtaking gold charm bracelet, sparkling with small, flawless diamonds and a tiny charm shaped like a rag doll.

"For the bravest girl in New York," Damiano said, fastening the delicate bracelet around her small wrist. "Thank you for saving my life, Emma."

Emma gasped, looking at the sparkling bracelet with wide, delighted eyes. She threw her arms around Damiano’s neck, hugging him tightly. "I love you, Superhero Damiano!"

Damiano held her close, his eyes meeting mine over her shoulder. The dark, ruthless king of the underworld looked up at me with tears gleaming in his dark eyes, his heart completely captured by a six-year-old girl and her mother.
