Chapter 2 - The Logic Gate

"To understand how a system detects fraudulent data," I continued, tapping the trackpad to bring up the first slide, "we must first understand the behavior of the intruder. An intruder does not always destroy data; more often, they copy it, alter the timestamps, and attempt to claim ownership of the underlying logic before the creator can publish."

The committee members—five senior professors sitting in the front row—leaned forward, their expressions shifting from polite interest to deep concentration. Dr. Vance sat in the center, her pen poised over her notepad, her eyes locked onto me.

Behind me, the massive projector screen displayed a complex flow chart of data packets moving through a local network.

"In Chapter 4 of my dissertation," I said, my voice echoing with an absolute, academic authority that seemed to push the walls of the room outward, "I developed a lightweight digital watermark—a piece of hidden source code that attaches itself to any file downloaded from the university's primary patent database. If an unauthorized user extracts the raw code, the watermark silently pings our server, transmitting the exact IP address, hardware MAC address, and user credentials of the thief."

I glanced back at Daniel. His face had gone entirely pale. He was an executive at a mid-tier logistics firm; he understood enough about data infrastructure to know exactly what I was describing. He slowly reached down, intending to open his briefcase and retrieve his laptop, likely wanting to shut it down.

"Please keep your seat, Daniel," I said directly into the microphone.

The entire auditorium turned to look at him. A hundred pairs of eyes focused on my husband, who froze with his hands on the brass latches of his briefcase.

"Claire," Lorraine spoke up from the audience, her voice high and trembling with an artificial, sweet maternal concern that made my stomach turn. "Sweetheart, you’re clearly confused. You look so... unwell with your hair like that. Perhaps we should take you home. The stress of your little school project has clearly gotten to you."

A murmur of discomfort rippled through the graduate students in the back rows.

"The witness will remain silent," Dr. Vance said, her voice cutting through the room like a crack of thunder. She stood up, turning her formidable glare toward Lorraine. "This is a formal academic proceeding, Mrs. Miller. Any further interruption will result in your immediate removal by campus security."

Lorraine shrank back into her seat, her face turning a blotchy, angry red.

"As I was saying," I resumed, tapping the screen again. The flowchart vanished, replaced by a live network log. "Let us look at a real-time demonstration of the detection system. At 2:14 a.m. last night, an unauthorized user utilized a duplicated institutional credential to log into my private university drive. They downloaded three hundred pages of source code, two patent applications, and my entire commercial deployment strategy."

On the screen, a bold red line of text populated:

INTRUSION DETECTED: IP 192.168.1.14 DEVICE NAME: DM-LOGISTICS-LAPTOP-04 CREDENTIALS USED: DANIEL MILLER (EXTERNAL ACCREDITATION)

A collective gasp went through the room. The tech journalists in the second row began typing furiously on their phones.

"The system did not block the download," I said, looking down at Daniel, whose chest was heaving with panic. "Instead, it allowed the user to complete the theft, while embedding an encrypted tracker into their local hard drive. The device currently containing that stolen intellectual property is sitting inside the brown leather briefcase in the third row."

Before Daniel could slide out of his row, the double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open. Three uniformed officers from the university police department, accompanied by two detectives from the city’s white-collar crime unit, walked down the carpeted aisles, their heavy utility belts clicking in the silence.
