Chapter 6 - The Scars We Wear

Four months later.
The private terrace of our villa on the Amalfi Coast of Italy was suspended between the azure sky and the glittering sapphire of the Mediterranean Sea. The air was sweet with the scent of wild lemon blossoms, sea salt, and blooming bougainvillea that cascaded over ancient stone balustrades.
Down in the private cove below, the gentle surf broke rhythmically against the pale pebbles, a sound that had finally replaced the phantom echoes of gunfire and alarms that had haunted my sleep for so many years.
I stood at the stone railing, watching a white-sailed yacht glide across the horizon. I wore a simple, backless halter dress of pure white silk—a dress that made no attempt to conceal the silver scar running across my ribs, nor the smaller, faded marks along my shoulder blades. They were part of me. They were the map of the life that had brought me here.
The legal storm that had swept through Florida and Washington had finally settled into absolute justice.
Julian Vale had been sentenced to twenty-four years in a maximum-security federal facility for treason, conspiracy, and attempted murder. His family’s empire had been dismantled, its assets liquidated to pay the restitution owed to the military logistics funds they had defrauded.
Vanessa Vale had accepted a plea agreement that resulted in an eight-year sentence at a federal correctional camp in West Virginia. The high-society circles that had once bowed to her every whim had scrubbed her name from their donor walls and charity boards as if she had never existed. The four hundred powerful guests who had stood by and watched her tear my dress at the Azure Crown had spent the last four months sending handwritten letters of apology, lavish gifts, and invitations to Daniel and me—every single one of which had been returned unopened.
A pair of strong, warm arms slid around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a broad, familiar chest.
Daniel rested his chin gently on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck. His fingers interlocked with mine over my stomach, his thumbs softly caressing the back of my hand.
"You're thinking too loud," he murmured, his voice rich, steady, and filled with a peace I had never heard in it before.
I smiled, leaning my head back against his shoulder, letting the tension completely leave my body. "I was just thinking about the gala. About how different the silence was that night compared to the silence here."
"That night was an ending," Daniel said softly, turning his face to press a tender, lingering kiss to the silver scar exposed beneath my arm. He didn't kiss it with pity. He kissed it with reverence, with the fierce, unyielding devotion of a man who loved every single millimeter of the woman I was. "This is the beginning."
He turned me in his arms so I was facing him.
Daniel looked magnificent in a crisp linen shirt and tailored trousers, his dark eyes glowing with a happiness that was entirely unshadowed by corporate wars, blackmail, or political dynasties. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
"Daniel," I laughed softly, raising an eyebrow. "We’re already married. We’ve been married for a year."
"We had a legal ceremony in a courthouse because you were still transitioning out of the DIA," he said, opening the box to reveal a platinum band set with a single, flawless emerald that matched the exact shade of the dress that had been torn in Florida. "And then we had a party where my ex-fiancée made a fool of herself and got arrested."
He lifted the ring, taking my left hand in his, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the rest of the world vanish.
"I want to renew our vows, Elena," he said, his voice dropping to a low, passionate whisper. "Right here. Just you, me, the sea, and the truth. No cameras. No politicians. No secrets. Just a promise from me to you that as long as I have breath in my lungs, you will never have to fight alone again."
Tears, warm and completely unbidden, blurred my vision. For ten years, I had held back every tear, believing that emotion was a weakness that got soldiers killed in the dark. But with Daniel, tears were not a sign of surrender. They were the proof that my heart was still alive, that it had survived the fire to find a love that was completely unbreakable.
"I love you, Daniel Cross," I whispered, stepping closer until my chest pressed against his, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against mine. "Through every fire. Through every storm."
"Through everything," he promised, sliding the emerald band onto my finger, where it rested securely beneath my diamond wedding ring.
He reached up, cupping my face in both of his warm hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the single tear that slipped down my cheek. He leaned down, and when his lips met mine, the last lingering shadows of the past melted away into the warm Italian sun.
Vanessa Vale had tried to destroy me by tearing open my dress to reveal the scars beneath.

She had thought she was showing the world a broken woman who didn't belong in the light.
Instead, she had shown the world the armor of a woman who could never be conquered—and the man who would tear down an empire just to stand by her side.
