Chapter 5 - The Fall of an Empire

The following evening, the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Hotel was host to the annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Gala. The wealthiest elites of New York society gathered under sparkling crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne and celebrating the record-breaking profits of Vance Pharmaceutical Group.
Victor Vance stood at the center of the room—a arrogant, sixty-year-old man in a tailored tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch while surrounded by press reporters and corporate board members.
"Our new distribution model has increased shareholder revenue by forty percent," Vance boasted to a group of journalists. "In business, sentimentality is a weakness. You must focus on the bottom line."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The orchestral music stuttered and died.
A heavy silence swept across the room as thirty men in dark suits stepped into the ballroom, taking strategic positions along the perimeter.
Walking down the center aisle was Roman Blackwell, impeccably dressed in a custom charcoal three-piece suit. Beside him, looking breathtakingly regal in a sweeping sapphire-blue silk gown, was Evangeline Hayes.
Victor Vance’s eyes widened in horror. "Blackwell...? You're supposed to be dead!"
Roman walked with a slow, powerful stride, stopping ten feet from Vance. The authority emanating from Roman was so overwhelming that the surrounding billionaires instinctively backed away, leaving Vance completely isolated in the center of the floor.
"I hear you have a habit of leaving debts unpaid, Vance," Roman said, his deep voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent hall.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Vance demanded, trying to maintain his arrogant composure, though sweat was breaking out across his forehead. "Security! Get these men out of here!"
None of the hotel security moved. They stood frozen at the back doors, having already been disarmed by Silas’s men minutes earlier.
"You collaborated with Moretti to orchestrate an attack on my home," Roman continued coldly, stepping closer. "That was your first mistake."
Roman reached out, placing a hand on Evangeline’s waist, pulling her gently to his side so she stood directly facing the man who had destroyed her family.
"Your second mistake," Roman said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly steel, "was hurting the family of the woman who owns my heart."
Vance looked at Evangeline. Recognition slowly dawned in his eyes, followed by a shock of sheer terror. "You... you were the girl from the hospital..."
"Her name is Evangeline Hayes," Roman declared, his eyes flashing like lightning. "And tonight, Vance Group ceases to exist."
Silas stepped forward, pulling a stack of legal and federal documents from his briefcase, handing them to the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who stepped out from behind Roman’s security team.
"Victor Vance," the federal prosecutor announced loudly. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, illegal drug price-gouging, industrial treason, and conspiracy to commit murder. Federal agents have already seized all domestic and offshore assets of Vance Pharmaceutical Group."
The press cameras flashed furiously, capturing the precise moment Victor Vance’s empire collapsed into dust.
As federal agents stepped forward to slap heavy steel handcuffs over Vance’s wrists, the arrogant CEO fell to his knees, looking up at Evangeline with desperate, pleading eyes.
"Please!" Vance whimpered. "Miss Hayes! Speak to him! Tell him to show mercy!"
Evangeline looked down at the man who had turned a deaf ear to her cries as Grace lay dying. Her expression was calm, composed, and completely devoid of fear.

"Mercy is for human beings, Mr. Vance," Evangeline said softly, her voice echoed in the silent hall. "You are just a invoice that has finally come due."
As the police dragged Vance away, crying and screaming, the elite society of the city looked at Evangeline not as a poor waitress, but as the unchallenged queen standing beside the most powerful man on the East Coast.
