Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the PastTwo months passed.

Winter slowly lost its grip on the cliffs above Lake Ashford. The snow melted from the pine branches, leaving behind the rich, sharp scent of damp earth and coming spring.

Inside the Moretti estate, everything had changed.

The cold, managed atmosphere of a corporate mausoleum was gone. The grand halls were filled with warmth, light, and the bustling activity of a real home.

Nora had moved into the west wing’s primary guest suite—a sunlit set of rooms featuring a fireplace, a private terrace overlooking the lake, and a nursery that was currently being outfitted with hand-carved cherry-wood furniture, plush rugs, and soft pastel wall hangings.

Her relationship with Giovanni had deepened into something extraordinary.

With the assistance of a team of world-class physical therapists and speech pathologists whom Julian had flown in from Johns Hopkins, Giovanni was making miraculous strides. He was now walking short distances using a silver-tipped cane, his speech returning in short, deliberate sentences.

Every afternoon at three o'clock, regardless of the weather or his physical therapy schedule, Giovanni and Nora sat together in the sunroom, drinking tea and talking about the future.

"You... worry... too much," Giovanni said one afternoon, setting his teacup down on a glass table. His speech was slow, but every word was clear.

Nora, now eight months pregnant, laughed softly as she adjusted a pillow behind her back. "I'm a mother, John. Worrying is in the job description. The doctor said she’s already measuring big. What if she arrives early?"

"Then... she arrives," Giovanni said, a fond smile touching his eyes. "She... is a Moretti... in spirit. Tough. Feisty."

"She’s a Bennett," Nora corrected playfully, nudging his knee. "And she’s going to be spoiled rotten by her honorary grandfather."

"Good," Giovanni grunted, leaning back. "Grandfathers... are supposed... to spoil."

Their quiet afternoon was interrupted by the sound of rapid, heavy footsteps echoing down the marble hallway.

Julian stepped into the sunroom. His tailored suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened—a rare sign of agitation for the usually immaculate mob boss. Behind him walked Marco, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.

Giovanni’s eyes sharpened instantly. "Julian. What... happened?"

Julian looked at Nora first, his expression softening slightly. "Nora, perhaps you should rest in your suite for a few minutes."

"No," Giovanni commanded, raising his hand. His voice carried the absolute authority of the old patriarch. "She... stays. What... is it?"

Julian sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. He stepped closer to the glass table and placed the tablet on the surface.

"It’s the Falcone family," Julian said quietly. "Don Carmine Falcone heard about the housecleaning we did two months ago. He knows Mrs. Gable is in state prison. He knows our internal security was compromised."

Nora felt a chill run down her spine. She had lived in New York long enough to know the name Falcone. They were the Moretti family’s oldest, most vicious rivals—a syndicate that controlled the docks of Brooklyn and had been warring with the Morettis for thirty years.

"Carmine... is a vulture," Giovanni muttered, his jaw tightening. "What... did he do?"

"He’s calling a Commission meeting in Manhattan for tomorrow night," Julian replied, his eyes dark. "He’s claiming that because of your... health status... and the recent legal troubles with Gable, the Moretti family is unstable. He wants to force a vote to redivide our shipping routes along the Hudson."

"He wants to test you," Giovanni said, his gray eyes flashing with dangerous fire. "He thinks... you are weak because... I was silent."

"Yes," Julian admitted smoothly. "Carmine thinks I’m a businessman, not a soldier. He thinks if he pushes hard enough at the meeting tomorrow night, I’ll yield the Hudson territory to avoid a war."

Giovanni stood up slowly from his chair. He didn't use his cane. He placed both hands on the glass table, leaning forward, his chest expanding as he looked at his son.

"Then... we show him," Giovanni growled. "I... am going... to Manhattan."

Julian froze. "Pop, no. The travel... the stress... your heart—"

"I built... the Hudson territory!" Giovanni’s voice boomed through the sunroom, clear, powerful, and unyielding. "Carmine Falcone... shook my hand... thirty years ago... and swore on his mother’s grave... never to cross that river! He thinks... the Iron Falcon is dead?"

Giovanni looked over at Nora, who was watching him with wide, worried eyes.

"Nora," Giovanni said, his voice softening into a gentle promise. "Bring... my coat. The old one. The black leather."
