Chapter 2 - The Sanctum of Silk and Steel

The sedan glided through the rain-slicked streets of Boston like a phantom.

Nora huddled against the door, clutching the silk handkerchief Leo had given her against her cut palm. The car’s heater blew warm air over her freezing limbs, but her mind was spinning out of control. Beside her, Leo sat with his ankles crossed, casually scrolling through a secure encrypted tablet. He looked completely unaffected by the violent confrontation that had taken place ten minutes prior.

"Where are we going?" she asked, breaking the stifling silence.

"My home," Leo said without looking up from his screen. "The estate in Beacon Hill."

"I have clothes at my apartment," she said quickly. "My phone, my cat—"

"Your apartment has been cleared," Leo said flatly. "My men gathered your belongings fifteen minutes ago. Your cat—a gray tabby named Barnaby, if I'm not mistaken—is currently asleep in the primary guest suite at my residence. Your lease has been canceled, your landlord compensated, and your utility accounts closed."

Nora bolted upright, her pale knuckles white against the leather seat. "You had no right to do that! That's my life!"

Leo turned his head slowly. His dark eyes were cool, measuring her anger with the detachment of a scientist observing a specimen.

"Your life was an eviction notice, two maxed-out credit cards, and a ex-boyfriend who was twelve hours away from burying you in a shallow grave," he said, his tone devoid of cruelty, stating it as pure, unvarnished fact. "I didn't erase your life, Nora. I erased your vulnerabilities."

"I didn't ask you to save me!"

"You said he was the mistake that wouldn't die," Leo countered, his voice dropping an octave, heavy and deliberate. "You asked for an ending. I am giving you one."

"By kidnapping me?!"

"If I wanted to kidnap you, Nora, you would be in a trunk, not sitting on heated leather beside me," he said smoothly, leaning back. "You are free to walk away whenever you wish. But the moment you step outside my perimeter, my protection ends. And Garrett Cole is not the only debt collector in this city who knows your name."

Nora’s mouth went dry. "What does that mean?"

Leo set his tablet down on the console between them. "Garrett didn't just gamble away his own money, Nora. He borrowed eighty thousand dollars from the Irish syndicate in South Boston six months ago. He put up your apartment lease and your employment wages as collateral, claiming you were his common-law wife. The O’Connells were planning to pick you up on Friday to work off his debt in one of their private clubs."

The world seemed to tilt beneath her. The air left her lungs in a sharp, painful gasp.

Garrett hadn't just stalked her out of obsession. He had signed her away like livestock to cover his losses at the card tables.

"You're lying," she whispered, though deep down, the horrific puzzle pieces slotted together with terrifying perfection. It explained why Garrett had known her shift changes. It explained the strange men in dark jackets who had been idling outside Rose’s Diner for the past two weeks.

"I don't lie," Leo said coldly. "Lying is for men who are afraid of the consequences of the truth. I own the consequences."

The car turned through a massive set of wrought-iron gates, ascending a winding cobblestone driveway flanked by high stone walls and towering ancient oaks. At the top of the hill stood the Moretti estate—a sprawling, limestone mansion built like a modern fortress, glowing with warm yellow light against the dark, rainy night.

Armed guards in suits, carrying discreet submachine guns under their coats, stood at attention as the car came to a smooth stop beneath the grand portico.

Viktor opened the rear door, holding the umbrella aloft.

Leo stepped out first, then turned and offered his hand to Nora once more.

She looked at his long, elegant fingers, at the heavy signet ring bearing the Moretti crest—a raven perched atop a crossed sword. She knew that taking his hand meant stepping into a world where laws didn't exist, where blood was the only currency, and where Leo Moretti was the absolute ruler.

Slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs, she placed her small, cold hand in his.

May you like

His fingers closed around hers, warm, dry, and unyielding.

"Welcome home, Nora," he murmured, pulling her gently out of the car and into the shelter of his empire.
