Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Vault

The basement of the Mount Vernon Crest Club looked less like a country club storage area and more like a Cold War bunker. The walls were thick, reinforced concrete, lined with rows of climate-controlled steel shelves containing over a century of private political records, campaign documents, and classified defense logs belonging to the club’s elite membership.
The air was freezing, smelling heavily of ozone, old paper, and the sharp, chemical tang of a newly discharged fire extinguisher.
Alyssa moved down the narrow concrete corridor with a silent, feline grace, her hand holding a high-intensity tactical flashlight she had pulled from Miller’s belt. Miller followed three steps behind her, his Sig Sauer raised, his eyes scanning the pipe-lined ceiling.
The door to the central archive vault was hanging open, its electronic keypad completely melted by a high-temperature thermite charge. Inside, a fire was raging in the third row of filing cabinets, the bright orange flames devouring thick manila folders and digital storage drives.
Standing in front of the flames was the dark-haired man in the charcoal trousers, his white shirt covered in soot. He held a large leather briefcase filled with un-burned documents in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other.
“Drop the weapon!” Miller roared, his flashlight beam pinning the man against the steel shelves.
The shooter didn't drop the gun. He spun around with a mechanical, military efficiency, firing two suppressed shots that chipped the concrete wall just inches from Alyssa’s head.
Miller returned fire, the loud bang-bang-bang of his un-suppressed weapon echoing deafeningly through the concrete basement. The shooter was struck in the left shoulder, his briefcase slipping from his fingers as he stumbled back against the burning cabinets.
Alyssa didn't wait for Miller to clear the corner. She lunged forward, her body dropping low as she tackled the shooter around the waist, driving him into the concrete floor with the force of a Special Forces soldier. The pistol flew from his hand, clattering into the darkness beneath the shelves.
The shooter fought back with an animalistic ferocity, his right fist striking Alyssa across the jaw, reopening the cut on her cheek. But Alyssa had survived worse in the interrogation rooms of northern Syria. She ignored the pain, her fingers catching his right arm, twisting it behind his back into a violent shoulder lock that extracted a sharp, agonizing scream from his throat.
“Who ordered the hit?” Alyssa hissed, her knee driving into his spine, pinning him flat against the cold concrete floor. “Was it Carter? Was it Harrington?”
The shooter spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, a cruel, mocking smile touching his soot-stained lips. “You think... you think you’re saving a family, Preston? Look at the briefcase. Look at the signatures on the authorization forms from 2024.”
Miller walked over, his boots crunching on the glass shards of the shattered fire alarm as he picked up the leather briefcase. He opened it, pulling out a thick, watermarked document labeled Project Black Horizon: Operational Exemptions.
He shone his flashlight onto the final page.
Alyssa looked over her shoulder, her eyes tracking down the rows of official military seals until they landed on the signature line for the chief financial overseer of the Defense Appropriations Committee.

The signature was written in a flowing, elegant script that she had seen on a hundred campaign posters across the state of Virginia.
Senator Ryder Harrington.
