Chapter 6 - A New CalculusOne year later.

The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte was filled with five hundred guests—executives, civic leaders, board members, and family. It was the annual Sterling Heights Gala, a night of celebration and charity.

Saraphina stood near the glass balcony doors, wearing an exquisite emerald-green silk gown that caught the light of the crystal chandeliers. She held a glass of champagne, looking out over the crowded room.

She was no longer the isolated CEO on an island of power. Beside her, standing tall and devastatingly handsome in a black tuxedo, was Rowan Mercer—now the Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management, a promotion earned through brilliant market forecasting that had saved the firm during a recent market fluctuation.

No one questioned his position anymore. His brilliance was undeniable, and his integrity was legendary.

And no one questioned their relationship, which had been officially announced to the board six months prior with absolute transparency.

Merrick walked over, wearing a slightly crooked bow tie and holding two glasses of scotch. He looked at Rowan, then at Saraphina, a proud, insufferable grin spread across his face.

“I believe,” Merrick said dramatically, “that I am owed a formal apology from both of you.”

Rowan raised an eyebrow. “An apology? For what?”

“For complaining so bitterly two years ago when I set you up on that blind date at L’Étoile,” Merrick said, raising his glass. “You called me a menace, Rowan. You threatened to throw my golf clubs into a lake.”

Saraphina smiled, her hand slipping naturally into Rowan’s arm. “He was very stressed, Merrick. He thought I was going to fire him.”

“And now?” Merrick teased.

Rowan looked down at Saraphina. He looked at the quiet confidence in her posture, the warmth in her dark eyes, and the deep, unshakable trust that had built between them over two years of shared challenges, late-night conversations, and purple-roofed wooden houses.

He thought about his daughter Chloe, who was currently at home with Claire, excitedly putting together a photo album of their recent summer vacation to the North Carolina coast—a trip where Saraphina had spent three hours teaching Chloe how to look for sea glass on the beach.

He thought about the grief he had carried for four long, lonely years—a weight he had thought would define the rest of his life. It hadn't disappeared entirely, but it had transformed. It had made room for love, for light, and for a future he had never dared to imagine.

“And now,” Rowan said softly, his voice full of deep, grounded certainty, “it was the best risk I ever took.”

Saraphina looked up at him, her eyes glowing with emotional warmth. She leaned in, pressing her lips softly against his cheek before turning back to the room.

“Come on, VP Mercer,” she whispered, her voice laced with that familiar, irresistible mix of executive authority and intimate affection. “Let's go host this gala. Together.”

Hand in hand, the CEO and the single dad stepped into the light of the ballroom, ready for whatever the future held, knowing that whatever risks came their way, they would face them together.
