Chapter 5 - Unraveling the SyndicateOver the next forty-eight hours, the DeLuca estate transformed from a quiet family home into a fortress of interrogation and tactical repositioning. With Victor Santos in custody, the entire network of conspirators within the regional syndicates was laid bare.

Roman moved methodically, dismantling every cell, freezing every illicit account, and securing every shipping lane along the coast. The attempted assassination had not weakened his empire; it had acted as a brutal, necessary purge of the rot hiding within his ranks.

Throughout it all, Nora and Maisie were moved to a secure, high-security penthouse suite in downtown Chicago while the main estate underwent extensive security overhauls and repairs.

On the third evening, Nora sat by the grand bay window of the penthouse, watching the city lights shimmer against the dark surface of Lake Michigan. A soft knock sounded at the door.

She opened it to find Roman standing there. He had changed into a tailored charcoal suit, his bandaged arm hidden beneath his sleeve, looking once again like the untouchable mafia boss who commanded the respect of the entire city. But when he looked at Nora and Maisie—who was fast asleep on the sofa clutching her stuffed rabbit—his expression softened entirely.

"How is she?" Roman asked, stepping quietly into the room.

"She's sleeping," Nora whispered, closing the door softly behind him. "Though she keeps asking if Mr. Roman is still stuck."

Roman let out a quiet, genuine laugh, running a hand through his dark hair. "I owe that little girl more than I can ever repay. If it weren't for her... I wouldn't have made it out."

Nora crossed her arms, looking up at him with a serious expression. "You shouldn't have been in that shed in the first place, Roman. Victor almost succeeded because your security was compromised."

"It won't happen again," Roman said, stepping closer to her. The space between them suddenly felt charged with an intense, unspoken gravity. "The network is clean. Every traitor has been rooted out. And the estate is being rebuilt from the ground up."

Nora looked into his slate-gray eyes, seeing the raw vulnerability beneath the terrifying reputation. "And what about us?"

Roman reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a lock of hair away from her face. "If you're willing to stay... you and Maisie will never have to worry about shadows again. You'll be protected. By me."
